it's funny to me that Cleveland fans will always complain (especially when it comes to the Indians) that the owners don't spend enough money.
Money for player salaries come from mainly four things. Advertisements, sponsors, ticket sales and merchandising.
This past year there was a pretty good increase in ticket sales but not as good as expected until the last two weeks of the regular season and into the playoffs. Season ticket sales also went up for Playoff Packages and so on, and depending no how many people carry that over to the season that will have an impact on the spending. Merchandising was slow, and advertisements, like a new name for a ballpark, were good.
With that said, when the Indians sign C.C Sabathia to a deal, and land pitching prospect Erik Bedard and solid hitter Brian Roberts from the Orioles this offseason, Cleveland fans will hopefully quit moping about the name change and lack of spending.
The more revenue, the more allowed spending. It's that simple. It's come to ballpark name sales now, which isn't something new. In 1993 when Dick Jacobs ripped off the city of Cleveland and bought the naming rights to the Jake for $10 million, people complained too.
Don't forget who the Jake was named after.

Official Release
$3.6 million annually for 16 years.
that money alone would pay for CC's contract extension if it was close to what NL Cy Young winner Jake Peavy received for his 3-year extension (5 year contract).
It is said that the Indians will offer CC about the same range of money as Peavy received, $17-$18 million yearly for a few years.
just to put it into perspective what the name change could mean for us and our chances of competing.

That's an interesting point.
"The Jake" had a nice ring to it, as does "The Pro". The Jake is a down home kind of name.
I use the nickname, "The Q" but I'm still not feeling that.
Gund Arena always reminded me of a disease.
