Public Sees Progress in War Effort

Post by Stephen Eisel »

For the first time in a long time, nearly half of Americans express positive opinions about the situation in Iraq. A growing number says the U.S. war effort is going well, while greater percentages also believe the United States is making progress in reducing the number of Iraqi casualties, defeating the insurgents and preventing a civil war in Iraq.

Roughly half of the public (48%) believes the U.S. military effort in Iraq is going very or fairly well. Judgments about the overall situation in Iraq have been improving steadily since the summer. As recently as June, only about a third of Americans (34%) said things were going well in Iraq.

I would let the poll in its entirely stand on its own. It is interesting stuff. It is weird how the data works (or doesn't work) with each other. There is a perceived progress, according to this data, but slightly more people want to see the Troops out of Iraq than earlier in the year, the same amount see Iraq as likely to fail and Bush's approval rating has dropped further. Weird.

Not sure what it means but not sure why Stephen posted it, since (as usual) there was no context to the post. If it was to show the oddity of the polling system, there it is. One would think the perception of progress would change the "US Effort" poll or the "US Should" poll or even the "Bush Job" poll in the same way but it is clearly not the case.

There was an exciting news article just last week. Some of the 1.5 to 2 million Iraqi refugees in Syria are boarding buses to move back to Iraq.

Good work people! On to the next war!

80 years ago a model T got 25 miles per gallon and seated 4 people. Will Rogers said something like, "America is the only place where people drive to the poor house".

Some say we got to "innovate" our way out of oil.

During World War II we had some innovations lost to time. Even though we seemed to have unlimited Oil and no worries about running out, we could only pump it out of the ground so fast. And we had to export it to all the allies and stuff.

The innovations were pretty fancy stuff. There were posters everywhere and public service announcements all over the radio and at the cinema. Everyone was encouraged to car pool, to reduce trips, to take trains etc. Passenger rail use significantly rose.

Those innovations may be obsolete today. Suburbia and the interstate highways didn't really exist back then on the scale and permutations it does today. We don't really have passenger rail at all. And Car pooling really sucks! It is like everyone in the car has a piece of your time, and then they start throwing their problems at you.
