The fact that "most of us would see the dancer turning [in the same direction]" makes me think the test is bogus.

It's a neat illusion, but it's got squat-all to do with left-or-right-brained-ness. It's got more to do with how your brain resolves ambiguous visual input and perhaps which eye is more dominant.
