The Plain Dealer today announced a bit of good news--that Lakewood has won a well-deserved recycling award for its top-flight recycling program. On B2, Metro section, a column by John Kuehner reads:
This recognition came from "Cuyahoga County's trash agency" in the form of "an Oscar, of course--the green furry Sesame Street character who lives in a trash can."
Lakewood's leadership in recycling is great because:
"Lakewood was named the Lead Community in Box Office Receipts because it earned more than $85,000 for recycling 2,208 tons of cardboard, paper and other paper fiber."
This recognition came from "Cuyahoga County's trash agency" in the form of "an Oscar, of course--the green furry Sesame Street character who lives in a trash can."
Lakewood's leadership in recycling is great because:
- 1) City Budget: As Councilman Mike Dever tirelessly explains, recycling saves money in two directions--cutting costs AND earning the above-mentioned $85,000+, which is important to do given our cash-strapped city budget. This eases the pressure a bit on operating budgets.
2) Environment: Dever also explains that the distance driven by recycling trucks is half that driven by trash trucks--reducing diesel burned and greenhouse gases emitted. Plus the recycled material itself diverts from landfills and eases pressure on natural resources.
3) Building the Brand: Lakewood isn't just any old burb--we're a forward-thinking, innovative community with a conscience. We put our minds together to adopt new solutions to old problems. If you want to live in a vibrant, enlightened, innovative community, you move to Lakewood.
