One month down, many more to go.
This issue we spent some time out of town, and it was a disturbing eye opener: One year later after the train derailment in East Palestine. When we went down we were hoping to touch base with some people we met a year ago, hear how things are going, and hopefully promising news if not good news. What we found was an absolute failure by all agencies and levels of government.
I understand how this happens, but I am still not sure why it is allowed. If your house was hit by a car, within hours you would be on your way to fixing it with insurance from the driver, and yours. While a major inconvenience, there would be light at the end of the tunnel. There is no light at the end of this very dark nightmare for East Palestine. Family nest eggs gone, home prices gone, health leaving, and very few $$$ to help those that could not afford to flee.
The most troubling part of this trip was that nothing has changed anywhere. The clean-up continues with no end in sight. No new railroad laws or legislation. No new ways to make victims whole again, and it can happen on any railroad, even the one running through the center of Lakewood. How many people in Lakewood can afford to lose their house? How many can afford to go to the doctor weekly, and monthly for hair samples, urine samples and blood samples? How many of us are ready to just grab a couple boxes and leave? The nightmare is two-fold, most of us think, this is an inconvenience sure, but victim's lives will get back to normal, but this nightmare keeps up until it breaks you.
This issue we also look at city hall, the schools, the students, businesses, and even LOVE. But to forget East Palestine is wrong. To think it can’t happen here, is foolish. That train went through the Cleveland area about 2 hours before the wheel bearing failure.
Call your state leaders, do not let them forget our fellow Ohioans who are getting screwed over very badly by the system.
Have a great February, show your love not just to those you love, but to everyone. Trust me, it feels great.
You can pick up the paper at over 100 locations and businesses around town. If you are in an apartment check your mailroom.
