Time flies as we close out January 2024. Seems like only yesterday we were welcoming 2024 here.

In this issue of the Lakewood Observer, we go through the new Refuse and Recycling Center with more information provided by Mayor George. This is just one of many major projects underway around the city. All are aimed at making our day to day lives better, easier, and less expensive. All noble goals in a city that is built out.

The new Refuse Facility, opens the door for a larger, and better designed Dog Kennel. The Dog Kennel located next to the water treatment plant, has become too small for the day to day operations. This became painfully obvious when a resident was found with too many mistreated dogs. More dogs and cats than the kennel could handle. Luckily Lakewoodites stepped up as they always do, providing temporary foster homes for many of the dogs. This state of the art dog kennel should make everyone’s life easier and better.

As long as I brought up the Water Treatment Plant, when the kennel moves the Water Treatment Plant can continue with their HRT Systems and enlarging overflow pools to comply with the EPA Mandate which has been hanging over this city going back to the Fitzgerald days. The last two administrations preferring to kick the EPA ball down the road, and take them on in court. In those years the once $5 million project ballooned to over $80 million dollars. The good news on this, is that it is ahead of schedule and way under budget.

All three projects not only make life better for Lakewoodites and their pets, but also less expensive the long run to live here. The savings are not extreme, but when you add the fines from the EPA, the many court cases just to put the project off, and the revenue from enhance refuse collection, it will make a difference.
