Well, well, well, here we are kicking off another year in the city we all love.

A new year, to get things right, correct wrongs, and hopefully improve our lives, and the lives of others, in a community that is incredibly important.

A strong community brings everyone along, not select groups, but “the community”— that means not just your friends, but your neighbors, and in a city of only 5 square miles, with the same density as LA, that means all of your neighbors.

If someone in Birdtown has problems, then someone in North Birdtown, aka Overlook Park, has problems. If people on the Gold Coast have problems, then those of us in the center have problems. Lakewood is the boat we are in, and we sink, float, stagnate or progress together. End of story.

I use “North Birdtown” as a friend who used to live in Overlook Park was taken aback by the separation and segmentation of Lakewood— a city that has always prided itself on being the best place to live for all.

This year help lift the boat for everybody. Give to non-profits, support community building events, reach out and help neighbors, volunteer for committees and to help with many of the groups that rely heavily on volunteers, and…

… step up and share your story and photos with the Lakewood Observer, a group that has dedicated ourselves to gathering and sharing news, stories and images for all to enjoy at no cost.

In the 19+ years of doing these we have gathered over 500,000 photos of life in Lakewood going back more than 30 years while publishing news, personal stories, information, poetry and more, and cataloging it, for all to view, and look back on. Together, we build community and record our growth.

Here’s the description from page 2 of every printed issue:

The Lakewood Observer is a product of citizen journalism, which means it is a completely community-written paper. We are looking for volunteer writers, photographers, designers, and illustrators. It doesn’t matter if you’re a professional or an amateur, our editorial staff will be glad to help you through the process.

Register to our Member Center at http://lakewoodobserver.com/members where you can submit stories, press releases, letters to the editor, photos, cartoons, drawings, etc, anything you want to share with your neighbors.

Have a great New Year, and don’t forget to step up!

You can pick up the latest print version of the Lakewood Observer at over 100 businesses, churches, schools, and apartments around town, or
