I received an update at 4:14pm, the man is in serious but stable condition and should be released before the weekend.

Story updated with details.

At 12:26pm today, a call went out for a "cave-in" on Thoreau Avenue.

What had actually happened was a good size backhoe fell into the ditch it was digging onto another workman. Literally 6+ tons of machine on this worker.

Lakewood Police and Fire got their quickly and stabilized the victim, and stopped the backhoe from shifting any more than it had. While a call went out to Kufner Towing for help ASAP

The way the victim was stabilized is with inflatable bags. They could not lift the back hoe up to high as it could have shifted and crushed the man. So with bags in place fire fighters went into the hole to release some pressure on his legs and chest. They waited while Kufner arrived, once there police and fire went back into the hole to stabilize it with the tow trucks lift but not to much.

Image
Kufner Towing showed up with two massive trucks, and started to hook up the backhoe.

Image
Acting Mayor, Brian Corrigan also the Law Director watches the great work going on with Lakewood Police and Fire.

Image
Metro Airflight landed at Garfield School and walked over to the scene.

Image
With everyone in place, the idea was to lift the backhoe just enough to get the victim out.

With the truck and victim stablized enough room was made to get him on a back board, and up out of the hole.

Image
Now strapped onto a backboard, police and fire went in the hole to secure him on, he is lifted out.

Image
Now out of the hole and on the ground the crew gets ready to lift him to the Metro Life Flight gurney.

Image
With the victim out of the hole, crews look back into where he was rescued from.

Image
The doctors on Metro Life Flight check him out to see what is needed.

Image
Then down Thoreau to take him to a waiting helicopter.

The man was responsive to the doctors, what that means I have no idea. But he came out in far better shape than any of us thought he would.

I will update with more information.

Image
With a tough job well done, the crew takes a break for water. Almost 90 minutes in heat.

Image
After all was settled down, the crews relax and think about what they just went through.

Thank you Lakewood Police and Fire, you rock!

Why did you say that Brian Corrigan is the acting mayor?

I didn't realize that Kuffner has such heavy equipment and the skills to utilize it.

I saw a large boat that fell off its trailer blocking the intersection of Detroit and Wooster. Kufner came out with some fabulous truck and lifted that boat off the road. It was pretty amazing.

Thanks to all the firefighters and first responders - what a fantastic job done under extreme pressure. We are lucky to have all of the people willing to help their fellow man!

In my law practice, I have to periodically review operational facts leading to serious personal injuries or fatalities to workers. Each summer and all summer long, I have watched workers at work in Lakewood without ANY personal protective equipment (PPE) accepting occupational risks that no worker should ever have to face. I won't speculate here.

OSHA going to be all over the company like stink on droppings. A man in a trench that is not sloped, stepped and no trench box, excavator close to the edge. Damn lucky the trench didn't collapse at the same time.

If you look at the photos 7 and 8 closely you will see the trench box in the trench.

Here is a photo from the accident seen on Friday. As you said OSHA is probably all over it and has shut the job site down, which is speculation on our parts.

The 12,670 lb tractor back in place.

The man was incredibly lucky, the tractor was basically resting on his head, though the only injury was to the jaw region.

Just amazing.
