Siren a Little Late Again

Who runs the city emergency siren?

I’ve noticed it always seems to go off AFTER a storm, not before.

Just now it “alerted” me, but the sudden heavy downpour and high wind had already passed through!

Beats the 3 weeks it took him to mention a rapist was working the west side and Lakewood!

I mean what is the big deal a 10-15 minutes?

OH!

Time for a study of how well it can be heard in different parts of town.

Maybe the brilliant Summers can build a bell tower in One Lakewood Place, and station a night watchman to watch over the City. Up his game to make Lakewood the healthiest AND safest city in America!

From the Safety Department...

The sirens are set off by the police dispatchers upon receipt of the alert from the national weather service
The alert was was issued at 8:17 Lakewood we got the notification from the weather service after 8:20 the problem is not
Lakewood it’s the way the alert is issued to the city
Recently it had happened on more than one occasion that we got the severe weather alert after the storm has started or passed.

Thank you for the quick response.

And if I didn't hear it?

From City Hall...

The system is an outdoor warning system intended to alert people outside to seek shelter
They system was laid out over 20 years ago and has been upgraded twice including the Madison Park upgrade.

Perhaps a new study? Is it tied with Social Media?

The ReadyNotify system works pretty well, but I didn't get anything from that either - I just reconfirmed my info.
The city outdoor alert is frequently a whisper to me here mid-Lakewood between Detroit and Clifton, even sitting on the porch watching the storm, even the "Close Encounters" tests on Saturdays at noon. That variation a good thing because it differentiates from a true emergency. And hearing is not among my issues.
As Jim knows well, I'm not a morning person, but I give the city permission to play a loud enough alert to wake me up. Who wouldn't? It should be loud enough to wake the dead.

Honestly, can't fault the city for this one. The alert on my phone also popped up after the storm passed. Not sure why they couldn't tell as anyone that watched weather could see it was headed our way fast. Accuweather is a great app to have on the phone, IMHO.

Good point Dan, having the siren at Lakewood Park isn't exactly a central location. A much better one would be near the intersection of Detroit and Belle, so EVERYONE has a chance to hear it.

Maybe the reason for where it is is that residents more near the lake need to be notified more so than residents near I-90?

Considering what happened July 4, 1969, that might be the rationale for where the siren is now.

Lakewood Park? You don"t live far from me, and when I hear the alert, it seems to be coming from Southeast.

Apparently, there are 4 sirens in Lakewood.
