Lakewood: Carjacking Capital of Ohio

Another carjacking last night, this one at the parking lot by Detroit and Mathews.
It occurred at 10:30pm, which is by no means late for a Saturday night.
This is yet another in the string of incidents that have happened over the past couple of weeks.
This is going to impact our "bar and restaurant" economy...folks won't come here to eat and drink if they think they're going to be robbed.

One good note: Thanks to the tireless efforts of our Public Safety Director, none of the carjackings were committed by pit bulls.

Oh don’t worry, the city has issued instructions for avoiding being carjacked in broad daylight!

Wow, this administration has let so much slip through their fingers. Especially our safety.

However, I do not think we are the Carjacking Capital, but damn are we making a run for it!

Hot off the presses!

This statement from Mike Summers:

http://www.onelakewood.com/statement-fr ... ng-stolen/

Please note the avoidance of the word CARJACKING.
Instead, these are “robberies that resulted in cars being stolen.”

Is this the politically correct way to say CARJACKING?

These guys in city hall have been spinning so long and so hard they can't stop.
We live in an urban area in the 21st century. We are going to have urban problems.
Why the doublespeak?

The approach to the problem seems sound. I don't love the cameras but that too is part of living in an urban area.
But I wonder if they implemented those security measures at city hall that Judge Carroll asked for.

Indeed it's a lot like Jaws. If you live by the ocean you are going to have occasional problems with sharks.

Bridget

I posted this.

I loath the headline on this thread, we are not the car jacking capital of Ohio, and in actually crime is down but car jackings are up across the nation. The simple reasons times are tough, and it is getting harder and harder to steal a car without the keys.

I followed this one pretty closely, and my full story is at:Wild Night, Accidents, Health Issues And Another Car Jacking!
http://lakewoodobserver.com/forum/viewt ... =7&t=24636

They crossed the street from Cleveland, grabbed the car and disappeared back into Cleveland. Good read, police did an amazing job on a night of many calls that probably didn't have to be made.

In minutes they had tapes, descriptions, car make and plate, direction of travel, all through cameras, not the victims. It was pretty wild how fast they were able to pull up tapes, and tapes from businesses to put the picture together.

Worth the read I hope.

While the city obsfucates by trying to pretend “it’s a robbery resulting a car being stolen,” and their sycophants yell “it happened on the Cleveland side!” (No it did not,) what exactly is the Safety Director, Michael Summers, doing?

He claims cameras will be utilized, but while they may make apprehension possible, they don’t stop carjackings.

Ask why are they coming into Lakewood in the first place?

It couldn’t be the cars themselves because you can find a fancy car in Cleve as easily as here.

Some say it’s easy access back to Cleve. Well why not just take a car in Cleve and have no worry getting out of Lakewood?

No, there must be some reason why, if it’s true these are outsiders coming in, they choose Lakewood.

Do they think the law enforcement is lax? Maybe we need more law enforcement visibility on the street - more car patrols, perhaps more on their feet cops.

Whatever the reason, it must be found and there must be quick action to counter it or it will continue.

I stand by the title of this thread. In fact, we're not just the car jacking capital of Ohio.....we're on pace to be the "Carjacking Capital of the USA".

We've now had seven carjackings in 7 weeks.....that pace works out to 52 in a year.
There are 50, 000 Lakewood residents.

Chicago, the poster child for American crime, had 967 carjackings in 2017.
That's in a city of 2.8 million people.
Their per capita rate is much lower than Lakewood's.

Baltimore had 402 carjackings in 2016. That's for a city of 617,000 people.
Again, they had a much lower per capita rate than we are currently experiencing.
If you've ever seen "The Wire", you can appreciate how amazing that is.

Well now Rocky River is worried about carjackings in its neighboring community of Lakewood and has taken to warning it’s residents:

River must not use Thompson Hines for their press releases. It should have been headlined >>>
"Regarding Recent Robberies that Resulted in Cars Being Stolen - in Neighboring Communities"
