In today's NY Times---

This is on tonight's council docket and has been reviewed in the most recent LO issue.

Personally I would love to see council vote to allow AT&T to build up project Lightspeed in Lakewood. What an amazing publicity making event and it bumps Lakewood that much farther along in being a tech-oriented city.

Now will I get the service? Maybe. I absolutely don't need a phone line and if that's required then I won't buy it. If AT&T offers "naked" project Lightspeed, then I may seriously consider switching.

From a speed perspective for those of us using Cox, it will be good for us also. When Verizon came into NOVA (northern VA) with their FIOS, Cox bumped standard speeds to 9/1 and premier to 15/2.

So if council allowed this I think everyone will win in the end.

PS - Who in the world designs the City's website? I went to this page and noticed the horrible picture posted. Why would you not be embarrassed to post something of that poor quality. Hey, I can come and take a better one if they need it. :)

While I am a techno freak, AT&T's latest stance on personal information troubles me to no end. While I expect companies to send personal information to the courts and homeland security when subpoenaed, I do not expect them to create pipeline for this data straight to the NSA and to use it whenever it fits their business needs. This smells of selling lists and worse. While the technology is breathtaking, the rest leaves me scratching my head. I will need to know more.

Also there are some troubling spots in the contract that I think need to be ironed out. I think the most troubling is that it would allow Cox to rewrite their contract which could include shutting down Channel 74 and the 3% fee the city now gets from Cox.

I have a call in with AT&T representative to discuss this and other things that stand out on this project. I will try to convince them to sign on. I know that Cox Cable representatives have signed on to discuss this on this board.

In an effort of full disclosure Cox is an advertiser, is underwriting the LO TV show to launch next month, and sponsoring the Kar Kulture Show. AT&T has also secured ads that would be worth more than the Cox ad spots. We welcome them both to the Observer, will put out the facts and allow the city to judge for themselves.

Bryan, I don't find any of the pictures on the City's web page a problem - in fact I kind of like them. Now the picture that is on the book they send out with people sitting on a horrible swing in front of a chain link fence looking at the lake, I find problematic -

Are we looking at the same pictures?

I'm specifically referring to the picture of council on the link I posted above:

Sometimes on this board it's hard to tell what a link is because it's the same color as the text...maybe something for the admins to look into.
