In the psychology of human behavior, denialism is a person's choice to deny reality, as a way to avoid a psychologically uncomfortable truth. Denialism is an essentially irrational action that withholds the validation of a historical experience or event, by the person refusing to accept an empirically verifiable reality.
The three words that could end denialism by City leaders and begin a healing process are:
"I am sorry"
It is important for City leaders to understand that if they could do this and mean it, they would actually be helping themselves.
That, in turn, might enable them to take ownership to help Lakewood heal as any true leaders would do.
Without a sincere effort by one or any of our City leaders in this regard, they own the open wound--they created the problem.
