Steve Barry - Not Closing

Post by Bridget Conant »

Lots of chatter on social media regarding Barry Buick. The used car lot on Detroit has been emptied and word is that Barry Buick is closing. No definite reason why or exactly when.

When I was walking on Detroit Saturday morning, the cars in the used car lot were being driven out and someone was nailing the door shut on the used car building. Maybe just the used car side is closing? Or is it all closing?

I got you all an answer.
I just called Barry Buick and the receptionist informed me that they are not closing.

That's great news! But what is going on at the used lot? Are they going to focus on new only?

Thanks, Lori,

That's good news. They are a good local neighbor in Lakewood.

Wonder if they are just going to repave the used car lot?

When I drove by last night most of the new cars were gone too. Someone mentioned pavement resurfacing, which I hope is the case. Unfortunately I've had to use their body shop a couple of times in the last couple of years, but I can report they did a great job.

Steve Barry Not Closing... Steve Barry Buick Is!

I stopped by and spoke with Steve Barry, about the rumors. When I first saw the cars moved I figure it was his usual August re-tarring the lots.

"No, not this year Jim, we are stopping the sale of Buick here. We will continue servicing all GM cars, honoring warrantees with GM work, and our award winning Body Shop is operating at full capacity. We are staying in Lakewood, Buick is leaving."

This would mark the last of 7 car lots that were on Detroit Avenue in 1973 when in the City long range vision, NUMBER 1 was "We must work to keep all seven dealerships here in Lakewood." Of course manufactures wanted super dealerships on freeway exchanges, and Lakewood cannot deliver that.

I asked him if he was looking at other options, and he said yes, within the framework of his GM association.

Apologies in advance for sermonizing.

But I feel like this incident is worth considering, in the context of two very different perspectives on public dialogue, which are continually at odds in our fair city. These being
  1. The "avoid public dialogue; people will just get agitated to no purpose" model
  2. The "people will talk no matter what, better to have it in the open so that misinformation can be spotted and corrected" model
I'm going to propose that on balance, this episode supports the second model.
