“You must be afraid, my son. That is how one becomes an honest citizen.”
Jean-Paul Sartre
Special thanks to the cast and crew that somehow comes together twice a month and creates a wonderful snapshot of Lakewood.
Observers, handling the good news, and the tough news, while still loving our city while respecting honest players.
Because we can.

The story about Madison the therapy dog was good, though sad. Thanks Mike Deneen for writing it.

Thank you, Matt.
Madison was a wonderful part of our community......I'm so glad that I was able to meet her a few years ago and tell her story.
As always, thanks to all the writers, photographers, editors, and sponsors that make it happen.
I especially enjoyed the reflection from the graduating LHS senior, the front page photo of the "old time" baseball team, and an interesting piece on banning Labrador Retrievers.
We are closing in on the 12th anniversary of the Observer......we long ago overcame the doubters, and nowadays we overcome the haters.

I wonder whether or not everyone will get that
Greg Murray's "modest proposal" for a Labrador Retriever ban was satire.
Of course, the key is that much of it is entirely valid. Dogs of many types attack humans, including labradors. Pit bulls aren't responsible for a disproportionate number of attacks—but attacks by pit bulls do receive a crazy disproportionate coverage by news media.
Situations like this present something of a challenge to satire.

Here is an interesting article about a recent book on pit bulls. The author contends that the fear and animosity toward pit bulls is inextricably linked to racism. (Read the entire article to get the full picture.)

Here's another take on the well researched book:

Wonderful story, though I ended up reading it through tears. I hope there's a new therapy dog in LHS's future...and possibly district wide. For a child to say a dog was a first friend speaks volumes as to how a dog can break through when we lowly humans cannot. Thank you Mike for sharing this wonderful slice of Lakewood with all of us.

It must be true that Labrador retrievers are vicious attack animals:

Old adage that comes up most frequently in relation to dogs, but has a broad meaning including humans:
"If it has teeth, it can bite."

A big thanks to Jim and the staff of the Lakewood Observer. Sometimes we forget all the people that are involved in the background.
Even though Mr. Summers has tried, and is still trying, to control the Deck, he is yet to succeed.
