Around 6:50am this morning the peace and quiet of Grace and Clarence Avenue, as a male was shot in the shoulder breaking into an off duty police officer's home.

The call went out "an off duty police officer had shot a black male in the shoulder while he was caught breaking into his house. at 1516 Grace. The male fled south on Grace and was later captured on Clarence by police and taken to Metro.

Good work Lakewood Police and Fire!

On Wednesday April 12, 2017 at 6:51am the Lakewood Police Department received a call from an off-duty police officer, from another jurisdiction, reporting a male had broken into his home and that he had shot at the suspect. LPD also received calls from other citizens in the area of Grace and Franklin reporting the sounds of gunshots.

The suspect was described as a black male, 6’, wearing a black hat, jeans and black t-shirt.

Officers checking the area for the suspect located a male at 1645 Clarence with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Lakewood Fire Medics were dispatched and the male transported to MetroHealth Medical Center. The male matched the description of the suspect.

The suspect will be identified when charges are filed.

The investigation is continuing.

That's great, hope the kid learned his lesson.

Just another example of the Mayor's inability to keep his community safe. I guess when you appear to be doing everything possible to cover your rear end to avoid jail time, the rest of the community goes to hell. Do some research on crime in Lakewood over the past six months, it is not pretty.

Luckily, this happened to a well trained Lakewood Police Officer, and not an elderly resident. Job well done! I'm glad this officer works for us.

I understood that the homeowner with the weapon was not a Lakewood police officer.

Hopefully we can get some clarity on this.

It still does not excuse the Mayor / Safety Director from performing his duties. Perhaps he needs to step down from both positions. It appears that Summers is so busy hiding the evidence from his alleged crimes in order to keep himself from having to serve jail time.

Regardless, we still have a fantastic police force, including our dispatchers. Thank them for there service next time you see an officer.

Just curious, at 6:45am on a Wednesday morning, what wasn't the mayor doing about this?

This is what puts me off. A random act of violence between two people that do not know each other at 6:45 am is a reflection on the Mayor how?

I am not making excuses for anyone, and I can point to hundreds of reasons why things like this happen, but I find it hard to blame the mayor directly on this one, or even come up with he is so busy hiding...

To me, the most troubling part of all of this was not the act, though breaking an entering is bad. But the flow on social media of "yeah you have to have a gun in Lakewood talk." I remember you have to close the front door. You need to lock the front door, You need lock all the windows, now we have to be armed? It is accepted as fact?!

I was making the point that crime in Lakewood has risen dramatically. Armed robberies, armed car jackings, tons of robberies, etc. You yourself have said before that this Mayor is not doing his job correctly. You have also said that the city is becoming a dump.

I was told that the Mayor has been calling and complaining about my Deck posts. Please do not allow this man to take away Lakewood's only free press. I know you will deny it because Summers might come after you. It is called extortion. You should call the FBI.

I have invited Mr. Summers on several occasions to post here on the Deck, or meet me in person to talk about some of my posts.

I fear we loose sight of real reasons this is happening over red herrings.

The call went out, police were there incredibly fast, and though the man shot escaped the homeowner, he was caught withing block.

The most important messages today are, lock your house, and call the police.

We have some really good police and fire people working for us.

This is all right by my house. I was actually pretty nervous then I remembered I have 8 dogs and 3 of them will KILL anyone that comes in my house. Seriously will maim if not kill a person.

Oh trust me...you can hear them all barking when you come near. The funny thing is people are scared of the pittie mix (lakewood legal per DNA test) and ignore the Dane. The Dane is the one who will kill you The pittie will laugh. LOL

Missy, so glad you have protection. Unfortunately, a lot of folks in Lakewood do not.
We have a great police force, but, they can't be everywhere. I suggest taking a concealed weapons course and arming yourself.

Once again, I believe we can thank our Mayor and Council for our city being turned into a dump and the drug capital of Cuyahoga County.

I believe this all started with the city and their use of HUD funds.

Since the alleged immoral and illegal hospital deal, it appears the king and his men are too busy trying to keep their butts out of jail. Since this is a full time job for them, they don't have time to care about the city or their citizen's concern. You know, like needing a hospital for 51,000 people!
