It's time to re-think some holidays, at least locally

With all the usual activity surrounding Halloween here in Lakewood, and a presidential Election Day which also includes our hospital referendum, it got me thinking about the various holidays where people usually get time off from work. There are several that still deserve recognition (MLK Day, President's Day) but in practice have evolved into little more than time off with mattress sales. Meanwhile days like Halloween and Election Day, when people really have stuff to do are regular work days. I suggest that the important days of recognition continue, but the time off be shifted to days when more people actually have stuff to do.

If you work at city hall, I believe you have a lot of days off, and flex time too!

As much as I love Bernie Sanders, the idea of "Election Day as national holiday" is stupid.
Just like with the other holidays, professionals will get the day off but low-wage service workers would still have to work.

The movement to replace "Columbus Day" with "Indigenous Peoples Day" has gained steam around the country....I could see that idea adopted in Lakewood.
How large is our Italian population?

I think City Hall should have a National Sunshine Law Day!
