Storms Come Through Bringing Destruction

Strong storms rolled through Lakewood around 4:30pm.

And strong winds downed trees, broke power lines, caused fires, and accidents all over the city.

On Belle Ave. a two car accident at the intersection of Belle and Frankli, this tree down, and a backyard fire south on the street all at the same time!

No one hurt, house covered, but owner was mad at having just come back from the store with a refrigerator filled with frozen treats!

Mayor Summers pounding the pavement going from home owner to home owner checking on their welfare.

Stopping to talk with residents with no power in their yards, again and again.

On Woodward a tree that had shut down the street.

After the rain was over the humidity was so high it formed clouds in the vortexes of air up the cliff.
Great work Lakewood Fire, Police, City Crews, and yes it is always nice seeing Mayor Summers talking with residents.
peace.

Great story, photographs, wonderful, a dramatic storm, got lots of badly needed rain, my power went off at 4:30, I missed the Indians game, dinner, air conditioning and my cold beer. The Illuminating Co. had it back on at 2:30 AM, thank you.

Jim,
Great pics, thanks. My family and I took a ride last evening. No power in Westlake, River, and Fairview. Everyone was at Great Northern getting fast food for dinner. Arby's even ran out of roast beef!
Maybe the mayor was going door-to-door trying to see which house he wants to take next!

Just kidding.
Nice to see the mayor walking his streets. It would be nice if he did this more often.

Still no power for us. They are quoting by 11 PM tonight (Friday, 12 August) but I am not as optimistic as they are to get it back on time. There are certain sections of Lakewood that seem to go down more than others and we live on one of them. We call it part of our "Living in Lakewood Tax" when we have to empty the fridge/freezer and restock. Sigh. At least nobody seemed to be hurt in the storms last night.

For those that were not out in it, it was pretty crazy. Lakewood Fire and Police all over the place.
More photos being sent in to us.

Thursday afternoon, It was about 4:30 pm, I had just shut the oven off, baking my stuffed flounder for dinner, (using the oven on such a hot day, I had air conditioning, no problem) the winds began to shift, the rain came down in sheets, branches, twigs & leaves were flying by, a window really did blow out, the power lines sparked and then the power went off, no lights, no phone, not a single luxury, like Robinson Caruso, as primitive as can be, I yelled at anti Em, get Dorothy & Rufus and lets head to the basement, but it was too dark, we couldn't see, so back upstairs, Rufus crawled under the bed and pushed me out, we sat in the dark for what seems like days, we decided to get to the car and run the air conditioning, we listened to the Indians game, when the battery died, we went back upstairs, the rain had subsided, so we sat out on the balcony, the street was dark as far as you could see, no restaurants or bars were open, Cleveland Illuminating trucks were passing us by, finally one stopped, a guy went up a pole, flipped a switch and the power came back on, heray...
