Residents Prove Lakewood Is Art! In Pokemon!

I first met Evan Filipek while walking by what is now 5th Avenue Bakery, near Around the Corner in the Scenic Park area of Lakewood. The musician, promoter, entrepreneur, had sold his drum set to open a coffee shop and bakery that catered to good food and bluegrass music. That night he had "Chittlin" and Dave Mayfield playing. Both were kids, brother and sister out of Youngstown. Today both are stars in their own rights working out of Nashville. Sadly, the coffee shop did not make it, and Evan went back to work.
Then about a year later I got a call, "Some idiot tag my fence." The Filipeks, Evan, Isis and the kids, have one of the most visible fences in town as it is on Lane Drive, in the heart of Downtown Lakewood. "I want to do something to cheer people up and my family, so we did a mural." Well if there is one thing the Filipeks love as much as bluegrass and taking chances, it is the Grateful Dead. At the time Stephen Davis had just penned that the Grateful Dead song "Shakedown Street" was reminding him of Detroit Avenue. The Filipeks decided to go with a "Terrapin Station"

Located on Lane Drive, between Belle Avenue and St. Charles. Just north of what is known as Terrapin Park by the locals.
TERRAPIN STATION - The Grateful Dead
"Let my inspiration flow in token rhyme, suggesting rhythm,
That will not forsake you, till my tale is told and done.
While the firelight's aglow, strange shadows from the flames will grow,
Till things we've never seen will seem familiar.
Shadows of a sailor, forming winds both foul and fair all swarm.
Down in Carlisle, he loved a lady many years ago.
Here beside him stands a man, a soldier from the looks of him,
Who came through many fights, but lost at love.
While the story teller speaks, a door within the fire creaks,
Suddenly flies open, and a girl is standing there.
Eyes alight, with glowing hair, all that fancy paints as fair,
She takes her fan and throws it, in the lion's den.
Which of you to gain me, tell, will risk uncertain pains of hell?"
And then came the Pokemon App! and "Terrapin Station" appeared on the game! Photos of the wall and tourist/game players went up ten-fold! The repaint was ordered! Steve Presser, owner of Big Fun, hooked them up with the artists, Bob Peck and Fade Resistant.

Well after years and many Grateful Dead fans making a picture at the fence a bucket list item, the Filipeks decided it was time for an upgrade, and upgrade they did.

Great job, and really picks up Terrapin Park!
