Congrats to Hens in Lakewood for proving that raising backyard hens in a responsible way leads to .... even more people enjoying the right to do so!
And thanks to this iteration of city council for "getting it."

It was a surreal City Council meeting. At the last minute (after public debate was over) Summers interjected an amendment that would give him broad power to reject hen licenses if there was a henhouse in proximity.
City Council actually questioned him on it but then voted unanimously to add his amendment.
Is anyone keeping track of the last time council did something by other than unanimous vote?

Allowing the hens is a good idea, I'm happy that it passed.

My problem with the hen issue is that it doesn't include everyone, just the "hen lobby" and their cohorts. Once again, government for the privileged few.
If hens are going to be allowed in Lakewood, then make the program available to the masses, not just a select few.

Strange (or not...) that I was under the impression that the hen "pilot project" was just a few locations, the purpose of which was to determine if it would work for everyone interested. I did not realize it would be limited in scope.

The legislation passed last night limits the number of licenses and the Mayor wanted some power over where they might be. So it appears to be a first come first served situation with the mayor having some say in where, in his discretion.
All this fuss over a few bad eggs, while Rome burns.

Hens? In downtown Lakewood? On Belle Avenue maybe?
The mayor already gave the fox the key to the hen house.
The fox ate the chickens, stole the horses, burned down the barn...
and has promised us a new rabbit hutch.
