INTIMIDATION: A 1972 Landslide Victory, a 1973 Conviction, and then John Dean....

by Brian Essi
News of the Watergate break-in broke in June, 1972 and indictments of many culprits in advance of the election, Nixon won 49 of 50 states in November, 1973.
After James McCord was convicted in January, 1973, he wrote the judge about "intimidation and politic pressure on many to remain silent"
John Dean broke his silence in April of 1973.
Dean testified about an "enemies list."
Nixon resigned in August, 1974.
Did the 1972 landslide victory mean that the voters approved of Nixon's conduct?

If this does not have any impact on Lakewood

I will move it to Global.
Maybe if you had mentioned, we never really go to understand Watergate because it was cover-uped with the pardon, and certainly we need to understand what the hell went on here in Lakewood in the earliest steps of driving the city into the ditch.
Or if you had meant the hundreds of shannigans with fake names and one time papers, and lying about facts, and how Nixon did similar things called "rat fucking," honest law abiding people, and how it was actual those thugs that brought the president down, and how that applies to Lakewood.
But as it stands now, it seems more a global post to me.

Essi's post is very relevant to Lakewood.
Back in the early 70s, most students protested Nixon.
Summers, on the other hand, was apparently taking notes.

Jim,
Given what has been discussed on the Deck and LO, the parallels to Lakewood are:
1. The Summers' LOI story and the Taxpayer lawsuit alleging corruption and the Watergate story and indictments both happened before the re-election of executives.
2. There is clear evidence of a cover-up in both cases.
3. Allegations of intimidation and silence to perpetuate the cover-up in both cases.
4. People saying the re-election should make the case go away in both cases.
5. Discovery of criminal/sordid backgrounds of bad actors in both cases.
It took 2 years for Watergate to result in a resignation.
We are only 15 months into Summers-gate.
In Watergate, the persistence of a newspaper brought down a President and his men--there was no internet.
So when the Team Summers people say in Court and publicly that the election decided this and "move on", the same dynamic was at play in 1973-1974.
We are barely at the beginning of the middle.

No mention or reference to Lakewood in the original post. The follow up justification could have been, or should have been, included in the original post - this would have made the post local. Instead it sounds like a JOB-type post with no refernce points to how it alludes to Lakewood.
Good post, though - wish it would have included the Lakewood relationship in the original.
Jim DeVito - what is your opinion on this?

I also criticize the tendency for some here to post overly cryptic or incomplete topics.
However, I think this one was rather obvious...especially for anyone that remembers or studied Watergate.

That would be Raul Monterjo, now.
Jim only helps when needed.

I get it. One could replace the names and actions of bad actors in Mr. Essi's post with the names and actions of bad actors from Lakewood. Sometimes Mr. Essi prefers to let the reader learn to fish, instead of the reader being given a fish?

It could have been as easy as, "I was walking down Detroit Avenue in Lakewood today thinking..." Of course that would be the lowest of low bars he could have crossed.
This is why Corey's six degree of separation was a great game for the Observer, while making a valid point. Make the Lakewood connection.
While in the the Hospital fallout will change Lakewood forever, it is not the only thing going on, and to make the connection as many have, is tiresome.
No one wants to get to the bottom of this more than I. But when someone posts a photo of let's say kids at a picnic, and the first response is, "What if they choked, and needed a hospital?" one does have to wonder if people are not reaching for straws that do not need to be reached for.

As I learned more about the Mayor's hospital shenanigans, a comparison with Richard Nixon has constantly been in the back of my mind.
Now we need a John Dean to help put this nightmare to rest.

I think you get bonus points for mention the hospital, and more points for the local nature

You sure about that? I question your use of the word "need."

I've posted this exchange from "All The President's Men" here on The Deck before (can remember the circumstance). Thought is was apropos.
Bob Woodward: The story is dry. All we've got are pieces. We can't seem to figure out what the puzzle is supposed to look like. John Mitchell resigns as the head of CREEP, and says that he wants to spend more time with his family. I mean, it sounds like bullshit, we don't exactly believe that...
Deep Throat: No, heh, but it's touching. Forget the myths the media's created about the White House. The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.
Bob Woodward: Hunt's come in from the cold. Supposedly he's got a lawyer with $25,000 in a brown paper bag.
Deep Throat: Follow the money.
Bob Woodward: What do you mean? Where?
Deep Throat: Oh, I can't tell you that.
Bob Woodward: But you could tell me that.
Deep Throat: No, I have to do this my way. You tell me what you know, and I'll confirm. I'll keep you in the right direction if I can, but that's all. Just... follow the money.

That's what I'm talking about! Try this...
"Forget the myths that the Mayor created about Lakewood Hospital. The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand."
Faint echo to my attempt to discern if Defendant Summers was lucky or sophisticated in business.

Maybe "want"?
Most of the evidence is out there, but focused attention would come if a highly placed whistle-blower would step forward.
