Post-Election Update: Lakewood Still Not Being Kept Beautiful

Since my last post a little before election time, we had the service department working half-days on Saturdays and the problem of early garbage put outs still existed but I saw a slight improvement and thought things were heading in the right direction. However, in the few weeks after the election, it looks like we are back to the same-old, same-old.

There are a lot of homeowners and businesses that do a great job of keeping their properties nice and nicely landscaped. I don't think it is fair that those that follow the rules should have to live next door to this or drive by and look at it. My family and I had a discussion on how this could be handled. We thought that since other public works divisions (streets, water, etc.) have the same radio system as the garage people, that they could relay early garbage set-outs to the garage people so that they could send a letter to or fine the offender. Most of these other divisions must drive down a lot of the streets on a daily basis. Although people are sometimes fined, it should be done more frequently and more should be done at the judicial level to ensure the fines are collected.

When police are also out in the city and not on a call, perhaps they should be given the authority to write a ticket. Also, the process for reporting early/late garage set-outs should be made very well known and very easy to do, both by phone and online.

This trash does not just lay out for a day or two. It often lays out for an entire week until the next garbage day. Finally, it should also be made more well-known that if you have a disability and cannot get the trash out on the right day, the city will work with you.

When you see this stuff laying out day in and day out, it really begins to bring the city down.

FWIW.
