Don't forget to shoot some guns off as you burn plastics in the backyard while killing small woodland creatures and plants with harmful poisons or pesticides... you knkow, just because you can.

Hey, that's a great idea Valerie!

Why don't we burn a gigantic plastic model of the earth, filled with motor oil to symbolize the certain destruction we're dooming ourselves to.

Of course we'll want the event well attended. Do you know where we can rent those huge search lights?

And we'll need to hold it in a location that everyone can drive to.

If the valet's use flashlights to park the cars, does that count?

Come to think of it, what happens if someone is still driving at 8:30pm. Should they turn their headlights off? After all, the more life they can get out of their car battery, the fewer will end up in the landfill.

Don't worry Stan, I bought a whole bunch of "Atmosphere Credits" from this guy on the internet - some Saudi Prince, I think he said. So now I can leave my refrigerator door wide open and the planet will be just fine.

save up your lawn clippings and dead leaves. keep them dry and burn them all on one special day. burn them on that one special holiday. it is a sacrament and dedication to the best of modernity we can enjoy.

I agree with you Bill kind of - but maybe for different reasons.

So I have read the Norhaus and Shellenberg' book. I have read the New Environmentalists who agree more with Obama than the old fashion conservationist. Like Apollo's by Jay Inslee, and Bracken Hendricks. Both excellent books for re-evaluating our failed conservation policies.

The solution is not to not use energy – but to find types of energy that don’t contribute to Global Warming or destroy our earth. At the very minimum we need to find energy efficient ways of doing things. It is very difficult to get people to change their ways and when they do they change slowly.

’ Environmentalists have gotten their politics backward,’ Nordhaus and Shellenberger write. ‘For too long they have demanded that Americans wake up rather than encouraging them to dream.â€￾" (Vanderkam) Making an energy revolution a priority will generate many new jobs that can work to improve our economy at the same time improving the environment. Vanderkam concludes that “Innovation – rather than conservation is the only way to fight global warming . Fortunately that is a far more inspiring message than sitting in the dark. “(Vanderkam)

Hopefully Obama will get his budget and we will get an improved economy, less dependence on foreign oil and a clean environment. Win, Win, Win.

And I think the Mohave Desert is a great place for solar collectors.

I prefer sitting in the light to sitting in the dark. How about you?

People are hard wired for religious faith. When they stop believing in the traditional religions they don't believe in nothing they believing in everything. The latest great awakening isn't taking the form of religious conversions in the traditional sense. The new religion is environmentalism and Earth day celebrations are nothing more than religious ceremonies.

If you want to help the environment help the world economy grow. If you want to help the economy grow build a nuclear power plant.

This blind faith in the new religion is going to do great damage to political freedom, economic freedom, economic growth and ultimately the environment you worship. Instead of blindly believing the propoganda they teach at school start thinking for yourself.

Like some religious huxter who demands a tithe so he can live in luxury the leaders of the envronmental movement demand poverty for us and luxury for themselves. You are lining up to have your pockets picked.

As I like to say the answer is easy... Nuclear Power and electric cars!

I would call for a turn-off-the-lights night when there is a meteor shower scheduled. It's great seeing stars and they are dimmed so by ambient light.

But yeah, sitting in the dark drumming sounds productive...

In college I went to an Earth Day celebration. I was amazed at the amount of trash on the ground after people left.

Prince Charles was so concerned about global warming he took his yacht to his vacation getaway instead of taking his jet.

This Earth Hour thing is a nice idea, but I have to agree that turning off the lights isn't going to stop global warming/climate change.

And it doesn't make sense to have it at night, except for the symbolic value. Why not have it during the day, when people won't feel goofy sitting in the dark for an hour, or they can go out and walk or something. Why waste a candle?
