March 26: a Community Conversation presented by Facing History and Ourselves and The Allstate Foundation. Pulitzer Prize winning author, Sonia Nazario, will discuss her book Enrique’s Journey. This book recounts the story of a young Honduran boy who braves unimaginable hardship to reach his mother in the United States. It is a story of modern immigration that will surely spur much thought and conversation.
Facing History and Ourselves is an international educational and professional development organization whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and anti-Semitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry. The organization’s mission fits so well with the mission of the Lakewood Community Relations Advisory Commission that members have worked hard to bring the Community Conversation portion of the program to Lakewood. The author will speak about the topic of immigration with students at Lakewood High during the day and then address the community at large in the evening. The Cleveland office of Facing History and Ourselves serves around 80 schools in northeast Ohio, including Lakewood High School.
As the ninth event in the four year history of the Community Conversation Series, this is the first time that Facing History and Ourselves is conducting a Conversation in Lakewood. Thanks to Councilwoman Nickie Antonio and Lakewood High's social studies teacher, Joe Lobozzo, for making this happen. Lobozzo teaches a popular semester-long Facing History elective course, “Human Rights and Conflictâ€, at Lakewood High, and he serves on both the Lakewood Community Advisory Relations Commission and Facing History’s Teacher Advisory Board in Cleveland. We also appreciate the support and assistance of Lakewood Hospital, The City of Lakewood Administration (especially the Office of Community Relations), City Council and the Lakewood city schools for supporting our partnership with Facing History and Ourselves and the Allstate Foundation.
Please join my commission colleagues at Lakewood Hospital’s Wasmer Auditorium on Thursday, March, 26 at 7 p.m. Bring your family, neighbors, friends, and co-workers. The event and parking in the hospital garage are free. For more information, or to RSVP, please visit facinghistory.org/allstate or call 216-321-9220 x221. An RSVP is strongly encouraged. We will also provide information on an upcoming Community Conversation and how to become more involved with the activities of the Lakewood Community Relations Advisory Commission.
