I thought it might be fun to give shameless plugs to businesses, organizations, and individuals in Lakewood. Here’s a chance to brag about some of your favorite Lakewood assets, from the obscure to the well known.

I’ll start with a shameless plug for Detroit Lakewood Automotive. That’s the Sunoco station at Detroit and Lakewood, near Cove. It is owned by Ralph Miller, and run by his sons, Terry and Tim. They are my car mechanics, and I trust them implicitly. Though they rib me mercilessly, I like the way they treat people.

Even though Terry doesn’t live here, he’s a member of the Lakewood Auxiliary Police. You may see him on a police bike in the summer.

Ralph is one of the finest gentlemen I know. He is sort of semi-retired, and isn’t there full time. I get a kick out of him helping the little old ladies, and pumping their gas at the self-serve.

The Millers may have the only free air in town, and that air pump keeps busy all day long.

I’ll give another shameless plug to Celia Dorsch. She has used H20 (Help To Others) to inspire so many Lakewood youths to volunteerism.

New Westlake Cleaners - Detroit and Webb, just across from The Beck Center. This is a "green" eco friendly dry cleaning service and the folks who run it are just great.

Alternative Rental and Service - 16205 Hilliard, just west of Madison. You can rent any type of tool you can think of. Landscaping, ditch diggers, chain saws, chippers, sawzall, plumbing snakes. Great people. Great service. Affordable prices.

Lakewood Hardware - 16608 Madison. Old time hardwood store feel. Great people. Wonderful service. Stocks special items for old houses.

The Shore Restaruant - The place is run by a family and the wife waits the tables. If you ever are down in the dumps or just want to be in a place where you always feel welcome, go to the Shore. Also, their breakfasts are not only good, they're cheap which is my price.

Empty Nest - The owner is nice and helpful without hovering. Their prices are great. She likes to keep the stock moving and it's resale that isnot junk. It's also not presented like it's new, it is what it is. I've gotten some wonderful pieces from there.

Sam's Beverage on Franklyn. Low prices. All kinds of "exotic" beers. Both Sam and his wife are stand up people. When I lived in the apt on Lakewood Sam's was a 1 min walk and a great place to go.

First my husband's business:

Masters Piano Service, if you need your piano tuned he is the guy to do it. His is a registered piano technician (rpt)which is the highest level for a piano technician. He is a member of the local Piano Technicians Guild. His website is easy enough. MastersPiano.com

And one of our recent finds is Hot Spot convenience store. Their gyros and sandwiches are amazing. The owner is a great guy and I really like that he remembers us when we come in. They are located right next to the Detroit Theatre at 16403 Detroit Ave.

And that new restuarant 56W is wonderful and pretty reasonably priced.

Having AlterReality within walking distance (on Detroit) has been very convienient. He carries just about everything Pokemon as well as just about every other trading card game.

Need a good bike, need your bike repaired, dont know what to get? Then Spin can help you. These guys are great and know everything there is to know about bikes and what will suit your needs. Professional, nice, and just a great place, Spin has all your cycling needs.

Ohh I will second Spin. I needed a custom length of brake cable to operate a clutch on my home made moped. I looked around and no bike shop but Spin could hook me up with what I needed.

I have to plug the Tuffy at the corner of Bunts and Detroit.

We always go there because they give an honest estimate and tell you the truth about what can be done now and what will wait.

Remembering us talking about them, my dad stopped in when he thought we was loosing his muffler after driving to our house from Elyria. They put it up, added a screw, and didn't even charge him. Pretty rare these days.

Firestone at the corner of Bunts and Madison is good for tires.

Living on Bunts gets us our share of tire and muffler damage-both are well located

We love the Shore. Hopkins & Detroit in the Terra Cotta building.

Don't try any of the home-made soups that I like because sometimes they run out.

The Dog House in Marcs Plaza. Everything you've ever wanted on a hot dog and more. The guy who runs the place is really nice and will suggest combinations to you that are spot on.

A different Dog House, for the canine variety --- she does a great grooming job, we shave our hairy dog down twice a year, and the dog ends up looking like a puppy again. It's on Bonnieview Avenue, just north of Detroit.
