The Observation Deck

I moderate for two sites (both use phpBB ). I just found out that the edit function can be turned off or on. I did not know if you guys were aware of this?

I’m okay without it returning. I’d like to believe it forces people to think a little harder prior to posting, knowing that once they hit ‘submit’, it’s there for all eternity. It also shows we are human and make typos every now and then. Though, I do wish the spell check function worked.

That said, House Talk, Chef Geoff, Pet Talk and other forums on the Deck have an edit button.

You have NO idea how many times, as a retired teacher, I have wished that I could reach for a red pen and start correcting you all.

Spelling, syntax, bad grammar; they're all out here on the 'Deck...

Sentence fragments, run-ons, you name it...

...all, made worse when I end up doing it m'self!

I do think that the uberlords of 'Deckdom pulled that "edit" button for legal reasons, so that people would have to stand by their posts, rather than erase them and claim innocence later, but what do I know?

I'm only the banjo player.

Some advice from my classroom days:

Please proofread your work, prior to submission.

As I mentioned to you on the phone two days ago, we are working on changing many things over. One is matching up topics and posts. After losing a couple post of Joe Milan's years ago I am very sensitive to this. As we are all volunteers there is also the equation of timing and continuity. The last time we worked on it, people were editing and deleting post, and it became a 3 am nightmare that saw us literally throwing in the hat, and saying No mas.

Of course this was said to you, but I am so glad you brought it up again.

I lean towards Charlie's comment, thought is a beautiful thing before letting it flow. Of course it is not the way Eisel and I roll.

Honestly, Joe is one of Lakewood's finest Republicans, and his two deleted posts came back to bite me again and again and again.

The upgrade would be easier had someone kept up on the upgrades.

On a separate note our new software does away with phbb, and brings an entirely new look feel and concept to this project. It will dovetail nicely with our City Wide WiFi project. phbb is so yesterday.

I can live without an edit button to ensure that posts are not deleted. Maybe a 60 second edit option?

I like to let everyone know that I went to Parma City Schools, so grammar is something they did not teach. LOL. My poor kids are doomed. LOL.

The idea of not being able to edit seems a bit contrary to the idea of the modern, updatabled and linked-in Internet. Although it certainly makes the forum resemble a series of newsletters sent out in paper form (thus, obviously, not "editable") it doesn't take advantage of the main feature of the Internet - it's ability to be frequently refreshed.

Example:

Someone posts "Stephen found naked in Lakewood Park"

Update: "Stephen found naked mole rat in Lakewood Park"

I am personally against self-deleting posts - I don't think I even deleted my old blog post saying that Colin Powell made a good case for WMD's (self-headslap).

Never opposed to a vote.

But let me say one more time, the edit button exists, in the next version. It is on a timer though. If we cannot wait, and you cannot feel the pain of the volunteers, then vote away.

In the end we are community driven.

I TAUGHT in the Parma City School District...

Parma High, Pleasant Valley, Hillside....

Whatever school I was in, exemplary grammar skils were indeed taught...

Now, whether the students always LISTENED, would be another matter altogether...
