Hi,
I know it is currently dormant, but should Lakewood develop a port and marina generating millions of dollars of revenuea year, who would run it?

So, you do what mom says, and you won't go far wrong.

I once had a group of some very good people formed with the concept and plans to put a small airport/marina out in the water with the help of the city We presented to the city, and after some meetings it was decided the city was not interested in the project, even if we covered the expenses ourselves.

Don

The Lakewood Port used to generate money for the city. Back in the days of the Sally B and Helen K. Used to be busy, today it is just run down and unsafe for all.

First you have to find it.

Then you have to go under the truck, past the garbage and grease pit, just past the litter, and under the bridge, Metro Parks will not let the city access.

finally you can start to see Port of Lakewood.

Potential, that is being lost everyday. Now it is just part of a failed project that is bringing down the values of everything nearby. Blight so to speak.

What it was like.

Dock workers line up to land the ships coming in.

At a time we are looking at every possible way to make more money for Lakewood, and make Lakewood a nicer place, we are talking strip malls, and doubles into singles(no sense in this market), instead of access to the river, the lake and Gold Coast style Condos.

Failed project is the least of it.

Property that was generating income for the city is now basically worthless with no improvements (house/building) on it.

The cliffside is inherently unstable due to its shale composition. Wonder how the lack of vegetation is compounding the instability?

Blight is right. That area looks third world-ish. Someone should take the property off their incompetent hands and actually do something with it.

This might be a bad time to even think about this. People are abandoning boats all over the country because of economic problems. Here's an article on the MSNBC website.

Port of Lakewood

The Port of Lakewood belongs to the City of Lakewood. It was established as a WPA project. It is a Federal Port of Safe Refuge. It extends 100 feet south from the south edge of the old Detroit Avenue Bridge right of way. The Port of Lakewood generates no revenue for Lakewood and it never has. The Cleveland Metroparks own and operate a marina south of the Port of Lakewood. The Krumreig family owned and operated a marina north of the Port of Lakewood for more than sixty years. Neither marina generated millions of dollars of revenue per year, ever. The Cleveland Metroparks continue to encroach on the Port of Lakewood. They feel they control the Port and the road to the Port. The Ohio Supreme Court feels differently.

Thanks for the information.

I do not think that Don was indicating that your family made millions but one thing that Lakewood could look at to develop, and make money.

Personally, I would like to thank your family for the days of great fishing off of the Sally B and Helen K. When my uncle would call and ask about going out on the "party boat" it was always met with and excited "yes."

Thanks again for the info.
