I recently got another computer (for my wife; sure!) and a wireless router. Unfortunately, we have two operating systems (windowsxp and vista) and an uncommon anti-virus program (FSAV).

I can get each to access the internet, but I'm not sure of my security, and I haven't been able to get my pcs to access each other (one has a lot of storage and I want to use that for common files).

So I'm looking for a tech who can solve my problems. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Having XP and Vista isn't going to cause you any problems. By default, computers don't automatically share their contents with other computers on the network.

Open Windows Explorer and find the folder(s) you want to share on the target computer (the one with the big hard drive). Right-click the folder and select Properties, then click the Sharing tab. Tick the 'Share this folder on the network' box and give the folder a new name (only for displaying to the rest of the network e.g. 'Will's Music') if you wish.

From the other computer, open the Start menu and select My Network Places (or find that entry in the Control Panel). Click "Add Network Place" and Browse until you find the folder.

You'll want to make sure that your wireless router has encryption enabled so anybody isn't able to hop on your network and mess around with your files.
