The Observation Deck

Walking by what used to be Rosati's (and darn it, I think their frozen custard would be perfect right now ...), I peeked in the doorway. The remodeling inside looks like it's near completion. There's a number of booths on one side, and the other side looks to be a kitchen space with a small area for a cashier. There was a cooler inside of the door with a sticker on it that said "Nunzio's III" and the street address.

So my guess is it's going to be a pizzeria, named Nunzio's ... perhaps related to the Nunzio's on Lorain Road?

So we shall see ... though whoever it is does face a bit of a challenge ... because within a very easy walk is Hungry Howie's, Donato's, Papa John's, the as-yet-unopened Dewey's, Gepetto's, Papa Nick's, and probably someone else I'm missing. That's a LOT of pizza in the immediate area!

So I hope that they've got something new or do something different to otherwise differentiate themselves from the pack. Sure, I'm delighted to have a place at the end of my street, but hopefully it'll be good ... and I wonder about how long it can last in the face of such competition.

I still keep hearing rumors as well that the parking lot next door is going to be torn up, and a Dunkin' Donuts is going to be put in, but I don't know if I should put any stock into those rumors. Though if it is, it'll be a great little corner of sin ... donuts, pizza, and beer (at Pug Mahones). All the basic food groups right there.

That's the only place open until 3:30AM, and us college kids don't always have a full fridge so we order that. Well, I think it tastes great but if you eat it you'll pay the price in the next few days.

I'll stick to Angelo's after learning my lesson!

If it is Nunzio's is coming to Lakewood, they are not going to be concerned with competition such as Papa John's , Geppetto's and the others. Their Lorain location is only open Wed-Sat 4 p.m.-4 a.m. They make their money and business on delivering pizza affordably very late. I am sure they looked at how often they are currently delivering to the Lakewood area and it was a no brainer to open a location here. To be honest their half sheet 16 square slices is a good deal, and they use real fresh toppings.

They'd be smart to sell pizza by the slice to people walking home from bars at 2:30 am. They'd make a killing in that location.

a place that sells pizza by the slice would be great ... many's the time I've just wanted a slice or two, not a whole pizza. Good college towns always have a place that does slices. Best I've ever seen was in Amherst, MA., a place called Antonio's, that not only sold (mostly) slices, but usually had a dozen or more different types of pizza ready to go, including a great one that had tortellini as a topping.

I'm looking forward to when Nunzio's opens, to give 'em a try. New business is always good to see, and sounds like they'll be competitive with all the other folks nearby.

That's what I was thinking. On South High St. in Columbus there was a place called, cleverly, Pizza by the Slice. I'm sure it, like the rest of the great dingy bars of OSU's south campus, is gone.

Yes it's Nunzio's and it's related to the one on Lorain Road. We went to the one on Lorain Road last week and their new menus have the New Location 17615 Detroit 216-228-2900. (It looks like their printer beat them to the punch )

They will be offering Dine-in at the Lakewood Location (per the menu). Nothing on their website yet though.
