OSFC cited declining enrollment in Lakewood as the result of the change. While the revised state aid figure is actually higher than the original 2004 plan, increased construction costs mean the new figure will not cover all three schools.

Your post is disingenuous. They are actually providing more money for the work, it just wont go as far. They are still giving the money for the work.

Like any other 'loan', if the terms change, the lender has the right to revisit the risk they are willing to take. It is a BAD investment to build enough schools for 1500 people if enrollment is declining and there will only be 1000 people to use the buildings. Then you are stuck with empty buildings that the city still has to pay for as far as heat and upkeep.

Also, the cost of construction has risen so sharply that I really cant blame them on this either. The $$ they are giving is more, but with the costs, it isnt enough to cover the three schools. Sucks, but I can't blame them in the least.

I will be surprised if we (lakewood) gets a choice. The OSFC will usually make the recommendation based on their assessments of the properties and its amenities.

Was the continuing decline in student population (23% over the decade) predictable? controlable?preventable? And were promises made about school construction knowing the schools would never be built?

The frustration I have is that the State has no money of its own. It's simply returning a small portion of our own money on the condition that we do what we are told to do.

If I were dictator I would dictate that we give money to the State on the condition that the State do what WE tell them to do.

the old buildings seem sound and sturdy. sometimes the roofs leak: better build a new building.

enrollment will probably go up as the price of gasoline goes up. hopefully the newcomers won't be from the east side.

I received some information today the the OSFC has recommended that the district close Roosevelt. I am curious if this is really the case and if so does the district have to follow their recommendation?
