WOW! LHS Girls' Rugby Team Rocks.
Congratulations to the LHS Girls, Andre and Alison. You're the best. We should have a parade or at least a PARTY! What do you think JOB?

Any details from the tournament? Who was first? Was it that team from Wisconsin that won in 2005?

Mary,
The report from the coach is as follows:
Coach Andre Bruwer wrote:As you already know our ladies did us proud and finished 2nd in the whole of the Nation. For 35min we were able to hold the now 5 time National champions but eventually their numbers and experience showed and they were able to break our defense. It is always hard competing against not only a private school but also one where rugby is a varsity sport and one with a long proud rugby heritage, however is saying this our girls did not disappoint and played the games of their lives, they truly did not only the Lakewood colors proud but the whole State of Ohio. We were outsized but as you witnessed from Saturdays game vs Sacramento California, our girls don't let size scare them off, they put their body's on the line time and time again and I could not ask for more from my team.
I am super proud to wear the purple and gold and to be the coach of this amazing group of athletes. They have been hard at work striving for this goal since October, 3 times a week, come snow, rain or shine and now to be crowed as the 2nd best team in the whole of the USA on National TV leaves us all with a warm fuzzy feeling (ha ha) as we now go into hibernation until we do it all over again next season.

I have been waiting for someone to post on this topic. This is absolutely wonderful. I agree there should be a parade or something! Being #2 in the Nation is a great accomplishment! Is there anything that can be done to make this a Varsity Sport? It seems they deserve it!

That's out of the hands of the Board and LHS, and is the responsibility of OHSAA I believe.
There's not a big enough following on the girls side to make it a sport, yet. Same with Lacrosse, although Lacrosse is picking up with colleges and now high schools like the West Shore Conference schools (river, etc.).
You'd think it would be a varsity sport by now, and I hope they turn it into a varsity sport. The girls team has been ranked nationally for close to a decade now I would guess.

I was just referring to a regular person in the community, not anything official from the school.

I wish the city did more to acknowledge the athletic AND academic achievements that students make.
It's another way of thanking the teachers and coaches that put year-round time into being positive role models for many kids that might not have that if it weren't for a club or sport.
Congrats to the players and the coaches. Coach Bruwer is a great coach and a great teacher. He and Mrs.Breckel should be commended just as much for putting the effort into the program and the growth of the players.

Would somebody please write a story about the team for the print edition of the paper?
It would be nice to share this news with the widest possible audience.
We've done stories about them in the past and have always gotten great feedback.
