The Observation Deck

Wednesday, May 29th, 6:30 PM.

This is going to be sad and memory-filled for a lot of graduates.

I met many of my BFFL at McKinley Elementary, including my future husband (in kindergarten).

Four of the founders of the Observer were in the same graduating class.

I understand all sorts of memorabilia has been discovered and will be on display.

Hope to see lots of McKinley graduates.

DL---is it Wed. the 28? Or Thursday the 29th??

Who knows? McKinley people were never really in touch so it could be any number of days.

I put the 28th in my calendar and then posted incorrectly here...

McKinley's Decommissioning is on the 28th. The building will be open for tours from 6:30-7:30, and a formal ceremony will begin at 7:30 pm.

Will there be any wrecking balls or explosions on the 28th or 29th?

Has there been a price set for the sale of McKinley yet?

I know of at least two groups that were interested in purchasing the property.

I'm not certain, because it's out of my area of practice, but I understand that any decommissioned public school but first be offered, at fair market value through auction, to any other group planning to use the facility as a school.....Obviously geared towards CHarters.

I could be wrong, as I frequently am, but I think before any developer gets a shot, the Board has to go through this process.

It will be a sad day.

I wonder if there will be any retired teachers in attendance. I'm calling off work to be able to make it.

If they tear the building down, I hope I can retrieve some of the plastic practice golf balls from the roof that I've hit up there over the years.

I can't believe you have all the names.

And for those unaware, Jimmy Henke (4th row left) is the guy from the Rock Hall.

And it's no wonder why I thought the guy in the third row was so cute...

what a great event!

the highlight of my evening was seeing my fourth grade teacher for the first time in almost 10 years. Also, my "permanent record" was in a filing cabinet in the Main Office where they keep records on file from 1930-present.

I learned a lot about myself that I didn't know today just by talking to past teachers and staff members who had to put up with me in those early years.

It was a wonderful night and a most enjoyable event. The kids performances were delightful.

DH & I went to the classroom where we first met and later, saw our kindergarten teacher.

I had no idea that I could get a copy of the dreaded "permanent record" but it was too late at the time to start the archeological dig.

Heidi and I were standing shoulder-to-shoulder looking at old pictures, including one of us in 4th grade, standing shoulder-to-shoulder for a class picture.

Kathy Ott and the crew at McKinley School did a very nice job of unearthing some wonderful memories.
