Congratulations are in order for the Lakewood High School Model UN Club for an outstanding performance at the Cleveland State Model UN Conference held April 10th & 11th. Representing Russia, Sonya Leros & Peter Malonis received the award for Superior Delegation. Also representing Russia, Amanda Nobbe, Aretha Kotz, Mathias Hansen and Thealexa Becker received Excellent Delegation awards. Matt Wesley and Robin Elder, also representing Russia, received Honorable Mention. Al Rodriguez received an Honorable Mention representing Spain.

Our students researched the history, politics and economic interests of their assigned countries, and represented them with accuracy, depth, poise and passion.

Competing against schools such as Hawken, Westlake and Shaker Heights, among others, our group not only did well in the "awards" department, but also behaved respectfully and enthusiastically throughout. All the students helped and cheered on their teamates. It's quite a priviledge to work with them.

Special thanks go to Garfield Social Studies teacher Mr Joshua Thornsberry, who volunteered his time training our students in the finer points of Model UN debate and research. His wealth of experience with Model UN Conferences, and the generosity with which he shared his time and insights made a hugh difference for our students.

Finally, Club President Sonya Leros was instrumental in all aspects of training and organization. We all owe a debt of gratitude for staying organized, committed, and enthusiastic. She has been a great leader.
