I just got a call from a friend in Strongsville that mentioned a group he works with walked through Winterhurst a couple days ago with the thought of buying it or leasing it.
They thought it would be a great asset to them, and a real money maker.
FWIW

Stan Austin wrote about the Winterhurst Task Force's report of October 2006 in this article:

I'd love to hear what has happened since...

Does Winterhurst make money now? If another group did want to buy it from the city, what is the downside?

I worked on this many years ago. Winterhurt is bursting with potential. It is one of the few rinks of it size. It had a Gold Medalist Figure Skating Coach and they have hosted big events. The speed Skaters are amazing. The hockey program is large as is the adult skate. St. Eds and LHS have great hockey teams. It does need the money making amentities that were suggested by the recent task force.
It does use an amazing amount of energy and it would be an ideal place to experiment with green energy. Put solar panels on the roof - or do a green roof. Maybe use Geothermal energy. I'm sure we could get some grants for making this a green facility.
I really would like to see it stay public. With a son that played hockey I was all over the area in all kinds of rinks. The ones that were public were always much nicer than the private ones.
