Hi,
Just surfing and I was hit with this image:


And I thought, how odd that our City's Chamber of Commerce's logo is a bridge to Rocky River. How about an impromptu survey here on what you think would be a better symbol for our City's engine of commerce? I'll think about what I would like to see.

an On-Ramp to I-90 would reflect the trends better...

When you take Clifton/Lake going out to River or coming in to Lakewood, you'll see those signs up as well.

Always found it weird too. They advertise in River, not in Lakewood.

It looks fine to me. Bridges are nice things.

Perhaps San Francisco should abolish all references to the Golden Gate Bridge, since it leads out of the city to San Marin county.

it must be because Rocky River has a Heinens grocery store.

someone once told me Lakewood was really going downhill when the Bob Big Boy restaurant closed.

I love the Golden Gate Bridge. But, is the bridge that the logo represents one of our standing bridges? It looks to me like the bridge that was torn down. Isn't it the bridge that still has a piece that was converted into a building in Rocky River?

Ah, regionalism...

There's still W. 130th and Brookpark if you need a fix.

But it isn't the same; in the olden days, kids would walk home from LHS or Eds activities and have a place to stop for food and sit in the front window and watch the "world" going by.

There is, to my knowledge, no place that's big and kid friendly anymore.

Taco Bell just doesn't cut it.

And here I always thought of as a bridge INTO Lakewood and OUT of Rocky River! So is the glass half full or half empty?

Since there are many different routes into Lakewood, I can't really see the bridge (that no longer exists) as a symbol of commerce coming to Lakewood. It's just an old symbol of a generic bridge for most of us.

I must admit I have not come up with many ideas. One idea was a symbol like the Lakewood Observer "LO" but with the end cut out of the O to make a LC. That would tie our commerce into the visionary alignment.

I have given some thought to Don's original question, but I really cant think of a better logo. Lakewood has a great many strengths, but none are easily captured in a simple design.

Our most prominent buildings (visible from downtown Cleveland) are the Gold Coast Condos, but those are not conducive to a logo.

Our most beautiful buildings (in my opinion) are our old churches, but these are not suitable for a secular organization.

We have many fine old trees (the wood in Lakewood), but I think Lakewood Alive already has a tree logo.

We could try waves (the Lake in Lakewood) , but Lakewood isn't a port city.

Our city's strengths -- its intelligence, creativity and compassion --can't really be captured in a simple design.

But, for me, the bridge does not emote those strengths either. Particularly, when the bridge has been torn down except for a piece that remains on the Rocky River side.

So, I can't help but think with all the talent in Lakewood, someone can't come up with something that does symbolize those strengths better. I'll buy a drink of choice at the next LO outing for the person that does.

PS, Lynn and went throught those same thoughts that you posted (e.g. Gold Coast, Lake etc.).
