Have you heard of this problem that is becomming huge? Catalytic converters being cut off cars for the metal. I had mine stolen last year off my minivan while at work in Ohio City. The thieves probably didn't get more than $100 for the platinum, yet it cost me $700 to fix. And I was robbed twice because I had to pay an extra fee for not having an old catalytic converter to turn in for the new one!!
I sure hope they start cracking down on the scrap yards that are buying this stuff.

Dee,
When we had our PI/Security Guard biz, once client had a scrap yard that specialized in precious and semi precious metals. We learned some amazing things. They had several guards there whenever it was closed, since armed bad guys would try to steal whatever they could get their hands on, from one piece to a truck full, and shooting someone to get to that stuff wasn't beyond them. Aircraft titanium and "cats" as they called what you had stolen were the "hot" items.

it is a high growth crime.
Many less common metals have experienced price jumps on the commodities market that far outstrip the growth of Oil prices on the commodities markets in the last ten years. I was clicking random elements on the periodic table on wikipedia and discovered this to be true.

Last week we got an email at work saying to be on the look out for evil dooers as 3 cat's were pilfered from the parking lot. NOTE: Not in Lakewood.
