Does the current council appoint the new member, or do they have to wait until January when Fitzgerald is sworn in as mayor to do the deed? Also, if Fitzgerald is sworn in as mayor, then he will no longer be on council and therefore he will not have a vote? Then it will be up to 6 members to fill the post. Also, when does the 60 days start? Is it the day Fitzgerald is sworn in? Is this correct?

Until Fitzgerald resigns, there is no seat to fill. Once he resigns, he has no vote in the decision. So, I guess it would depend upon the timing of the resignation. But, assuming that occurs immediately before taking the oath as Mayor, his vacancy will be filled by whoever makes up the council at that time. I suppose he could resign early, and thus giving the current council the power to appoint, assuming they can do so within 60 days. The 60 days would commence once the vacancy is created.

Dan Shields would be a good choice. He wants the job and is well qualified.

Some say he would be the wrong choice because was defeated in his recent election bid. That is a legitimate objection.

However...

The guy that runs and loses got more votes than the guy who never ran at all.

And I will repeat what I said on the other thread.
Using those criteria, there is a person who is currently available, who has more years of experience on Lakewood city council than anyone who will be serving in 2008, ran the important finance committee, who has never lost a council race, and who has won a citywide election. And he got many more votes than Mr. Shields did yesterday.

His name is Thomas J. George. Why shouldnt he be nominated for the open post? Would you be OK with that.

I think the more important question here is, would Tom George be o.k with that? Would Ed and Tom be able to work together? I think there are a lot of excellent choices out there. Some have run and lost, others have never run at all. Time will tell.

Why not Jennifer Scott?

I'll cast my unofficial vote for Jennifer Brinkman Scott as well.
She'd be a force to reckon with
