Lakewood resident Brigitt Eileen Balogh, daughter of lifetime Lakewood resident Mary Simon, has placed second in the 500M Roller Skating Race, in the 2007 Summer Special Olympics held in China. She is scheduled to race in the 300M and 1000M in the next two days. Lakewood should be very proud of Brigitt for this amazing accomplishment. GO BRIGITT!

On another note, my brother is there coaching the swim team. If anyone is in contact with Mary his name is Jim Brinkman. I am sure he would go and cheer her daughter on.

I might also point out that the Simon family has a decades long history on Lakeland Avenue and Brigitt's grandfather, Jack, is acknowliedged as the "Mayor of Lakeland"

I just ran into Mary Simon, Brigitt's mom. I had noticed that Brigitt's time went way down for the 300 meter and the 1000 meter. Apparently she fell while doing a crossover in the 300 meter and lost time and was knocked down in the 1000 meter. The young woman who knocked her down was eliminated, but Brigitt lost almost a minute in her time.

All in all, Brigitt you did a great job and your home town in very, very proud of you!

My brother called my parents on Friday and told them about Bridgitt so I know he has had contact with her. Too bad about what happened but, having attended lots of Special Olympic events over the years I know she got a lot of applause, hugs, and smiles from all involved. Congratulations!!!

It would be great to hear all about it- so glad he hooked up with her. I know she has just been thrilled to be there.

Thanks Jennifer

Thanks JJ

P.S. I would guesstimate that she wears a medium.

How cool is that?

I thought the MacGregor first-person civic journalism report about the LHS chorus at Carnegie Hall was great, but the Observer will have a reporter covering a local athlete (and coaching) in China!
