I think Hollywood Video as a company is having issues, I don't think this is just a Lakewood thing.

That's actually a nice location, hopefully someone will snap it up.

It was in the USA Today that there are over 500 Hollywood Video stores nationwide that are shutting down, so it is not just a Lakewood thing.

County records reflect that Hollywood Video's building sold in August to an out-of-state investor, prior to the store closing. I anticipate we'll know soon what's taking its place. At this point I don't know what the new owner has planned.

It may not be just a Lakewood thing, but it's certainly going to affect the city either way if the building sits empty as so many are.

Maybe they'll open a family style restaurant where you can go on Sundays for a great dinner.....with sticky buns and molded jello salads with bing cherries....

Yah, Hollywood Video is shaking its fist at Netflix and Blockbuster-online. Why pay a lot for a limited selection when you have tons to choose from that come to your door as much or cheaper than going to rent. Brick and mortor rentals are having problems all over. This is fairly upsetting to the few teenagers that will now have to work at a DIFFERENT rental store somewhere (facetious, I know) but this isn't nearly as sad as the loss of B-Ware Video and Retropolis, two fine niche rental stores that were run out by...well, Hollywood and Blockbuster Videos (and, oh, Netflix I suppose).

That said, I will have to raid the store for some deals! Everything must go!

Will this happen when the Boomer generation decides they don't want to medicate themselves into old age and Rite Aid/Medic/CVS stores start to shut down on every other corner (since one is almost literally on every other corner)?

As far as I know, these "teenagers" that work at Hollywood Video and Blockbuster are over 18 years of age, making them adults.

you have to be over 18 to work at those stores, don't know why.

regardless, it sucks that another business is closing..but it really doesn't surprise me. As Bill mentioned the Blockbuster Online deal..which is even putting Netflix out of business slowly.. is what is driving the 500 stores away from store fronts.

I think Lakewood businesses aren't being supported enough because of lack of parking. But that's where the walkable community comes into play.. you can walk everywhere in Lakewood if you have to.

It's unfortunate to read news like this on a weekly, monthly basis but these are changing times.

Nice. Don't forget though they were also a company from out of town so their actions are not as relevant as businesses that were born in, went to school in and live in Lakewood.

...and still teenagers. I wasn't trying to besmirch their jobs, but I went in there from time to time and it always seemed like new staff people. It isn't a "career" job site we are losing and if the property is already purchased (one with the aforementioned rare parking lot) I think it won't stay empty long. I am betting restaurant or bar (or both).

You have to be 18 to rent Rated R movies, I would suspect.

Of more concern is the perpetually empty store across from Winking Lizard. Since Giant Eagle now owns both stores on that corner, they won't ever let another competitor come in there, right? Or do they eventually have to put up or sell it?
