Spotted a few wood peckers in my backyard today. They've been hanging out in the neighbors tree all day, and it's the first time I've seen a wood pecker around my yard.
today has been a busy day with cardinals and bluejays, wood peckers, squirrles, you name it. it's like a zoo!
What types of birds make an appearance in your back yard that aren't too common?

That appears to be a Female Red-Bellied Woodpecker because the male usually has a red nape that extends to its cap.
For me, its not a question of which uncommon birds show up to our feeders, but which common birds don't show up. To name a few I haven't seen in awhile:
- Black Capped Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
Pileated Woodpecker
Baltimore Orioles
Goldfinches
Since Lakewood is pretty urban and well-developed, the wildlife is not as abundant as it was say 20-30 years ago. But, most of these birds are spotted all throughout the Metroparks.

I live near the valley and have been seeing a huge black or gray bird. It is not a hawk, crow or anything that I have ever seen before. I have only seen it from a distance. I estimate that the wing span is about 6'. My first thought when I saw this flying beast was "kiss the cats good bye"
