"LAKEWOOD - State Representative Michael Skindell is crediting a bicycle helmet for saving his life after he was hit while on a bike ride.
A spokeswoman for the Lakewood Democrat says Skindell, an avid cyclist, was on a 12-mile ride through Lakewood and Cleveland Tuesday night when he was struck by a car turning left in front of him at W. 115th and Lake Avenue.

The impact sent Skindell hurtling from his bike. He then slammed his head into the road. Without the helmet, the spokeswoman says the injuries would have been catastrophic.

Skindell is recovering in the intensive care unit from a ruptured spleen and a broken collarbone.

Through his office, Skindell issued a statement, Wednesday morning. "I am in excellent care in Lakewood Hospital, and am confident that I will recover quickly. I am extremely thankful that I was wearing my helmet at the time. This incident should serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of wearing safety helmets while riding your bicycle. Without my helmet, my injuries would have almost certainly been life-threatening."

What a horrible tragedy. Just brings more emphasis on the advocacy work that Bike Lakewood is doing to try and making cycling safer for all.
