JA program at LHS

Post by Shawn Juris »

Junior Achievement has come back to Lakewood High School to offer a 6 session program which focuses on career planning and financial education. There are 12 classes that have opened their classrooms to this program. 2 of these classes are in need of a volunteer to facilitate. With the school year winding down we would like to start right away.
All materials are prepared and provided by Junior Achievement and all that is asked is that the volunteer teach one session per week for 6 consecutive weeks. The remaining 2 classes are in the morning and should fit into a normal work schedule.
This is a great opportunity to get involved and provide something that can be truly beneficial. This first round of programs is just the start of something that will further enhance the curriculum at the high school and further prepare our Lakewood student for the real world.

No takers yet? Teams are acceptable if you can't make each of the 6 sessions. My skepticism is kicking in a bit that some of the chit chat is just that. This is the opportunity for involvement. I understand that scheduling can be challenge and that some are very involved already but I haven't heard of anyone stepping up yet. Time's running out, summer will be here soon.

I look forward to your Observer article detailing the program and what is required of volunteers.

Is it six weeks or eight? How much time is necessary to prepare for the classes? Are background checks required? What skill sets would best fit the program? Is prior teaching experience helpful?

I would also add that this is not the ideal way for some to get involved.

Not everyone finds great joy in working with children, let alone with teenage children. I, for one, know myself well enough to know that I do not have nearly enough patience to do something like this. (one of the reasons I virtually worship teachers and those that CHOOSE to work with kids).

Hang in there and make sure you use as many communication methods as possible to recruit and I am sure you find people that (1) have the skill sets, (2) have the time & (3) have the desire to fill these roles.

Always,
Charyn

As indicated initially in the post for more information please contact Kelly Patton Hatgas at khatgas@jacleveland.org, I'm sure she would be happy to answer any questions.
I do agree that it is a unique opportunity and should be carefully considered. With the ever present criticisms of expenses from planning and studies and NCLB and any other gripe that may exist, this is (for the right person) an opportunity to have a positive impact rather than just talk about how bad everything else is.
While this is the "Observer" our roles can (and often do) go beyond just that activity.
