Do you have a favorite book that reminds you of your childhood? Of course you do. Almost everyone has at least one book that they asked, or in most cases, begged their Mom or Dad to read over and over again. For me, A Fish out of Water was that book. I enjoyed it because it showed how extraordinary things happen to ordinary people. Having a book of my own that I could read over and over again, made reading special. That’s where “Tales for Tots†comes in.
“Tales for Tots†is a book drive for preschool children, being organized by students in H2O (Help to Others). H2O is a service learning program sponsored by the City of Lakewood. We are trying to give Lakewood preschoolers a book, or two, of their own for Valentine’s Day. To make this truly a community project, we are asking people throughout Lakewood to support “Tales for Tots†by donating new or gently used books at one of our collection points.
On February 10th, Lakewood High members of H2O and Key Club will be collecting books from 11am to 3 pm at the following locations: Giant Eagle, Lakewood YMCA, Phoenix Coffee, Rego's, Nature's Bin and Liberty Books in Rocky River. Collection boxes are also available weekdays, beginning now, through February 14th at Lakewood Division of Youth -12900 Madison Ave. and The Family Room -17400 Northwood Ave.
Our goal is to collect 2007 books by Valentine’s Day. Once the books are collected, they will be distributed by members of Lakewood Kiwanis Club. The Kiwanis members plan to read to children at every Lakewood preschool/daycare center. After storytime, they hope to give each 3-5 year old a book, or two, to take home.
Toni Gelsomino, Assistant Director of Lakewood Division of Early Childhood, says “This project is absolutely wonderful! We are grateful to H2O, Key Club and Lakewood Kiwanis Club for coming together to champion literacy for our young children. “Tales for Tots†will enhance home libraries and reading in generalâ€Â.
H2O’s student planning committee is so determined to get this project off the ground, that we e-mailed popular talk show hosts Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey to gain their support and hopefully a donation of books as well.
If don’t have any books to donate, but still would like to help with this project, you can make a monetary donation, which we will use to buy new books at a discount. Checks should be made out to The Lakewood Foundation/H2O with “Tales for Tots†in the memo line. Please mail donations to Lakewood Division of Youth, 12900 Madison Ave., Lakewood, OH 44107.
“Tales for Tots†not only helps young children appreciate learning through reading, but also strengthens families and the time they share together. That’s why we chose the slogan “A love of books begins at homeâ€Â. Thank you for your support!
