Dear Lakewood Preservationist

The Mathew Hall house is in imminent danger. The Lakewood Historical Society and Hall family descendents can fund the moving and renovation of the house. However, the only suitable new location for the home includes a small, back corner of Edward’s Park. Please urge the city administration and city council to allow the home to be placed on this land. Contact them today!

Help Save The Historic Hall House

One of Lakewood’s few remaining early settler homes is slated to be demolished for a parking lot. The Lakewood Historical Society is working to preserve this historic gem by moving it to a new location.

Joseph and Sarah Hall arrived in Rockport Township (Lakewood) in the 1830s with five small children and another on the way. As adults, these Hall children owned property later developed into Hall, Ethel, Edward, Arthur, Mathews, McClure, Maile and Lauderdale Avenues. The Hall family came to Lakewood in its earliest years and contributed to its growth from a small hamlet into a thriving streetcar suburb.

Son Mathew owned land west of Cranford, extending north from Detroit Avenue. In 1870, he built his first home, which still stands at 16906 Detroit Avenue. The simple frame house has three original rooms downstairs, a low bedroom upstairs, wide plank floors and upright beams in the basement made from the trunks of young cedar trees with the bark still attached. Most recently, the building was home to Teacups in Time. The Mathew Hall house is one of the few early homes left in the city and is a surviving link to our community’s past. You can learn more about the Hall family at www.lakewoodhistory.org/artifacts/

The current owner is willing to donate the house; however, it must be moved. Descendants of Mathew Hall are willing to renovate the property as a private residence. The only feasible location for the house would require a small portion in the northeast corner of Edwards Park, part of the original Mathew Hall estate.

You can help by contacting members of the City of Lakewood administration and council to encourage them to find a solution for the historic Hall house (contact information on back). Lakewood’s history and architecture make our community special. Please help us save this important link to our past.

When is it slated to be demolished? I see there is a backhoe or something in the yard chomping at the bit.
