The Observation Deck

The day they said would never come is upon us. The first anniversary/birthday for the Lakewood Observer.

When the Lakewood Observer was first thought up on that rainy afternoon eating lunch at Wu's on Madison, we hoped for a run of three issues, then six, then 13, then 23 Well here we are on the eve of our birthday, and it would appear the paper is not only established, it is growing in ways we never thought possible. The website has been secured for at least another two years, and the paper is also cementing the needed sponsorship, advertisers and members for the long term future of this project.

So any ideas how we celebrate this joyous occasion?

Bowling Party?

During the Fourth of July Parade/Picnic?

A bottle of aspirin and some ice for the head in a dark room?

Post any and all ideas.

Thanks to everyone that has taken part in this grand project. The advisory board is pleasantly surprised with each issue, and post. As we move into the coming year we will be unveiling many new items and projects all designed to help residents know more about Lakewood, and have fun while doing it.

We are making history not just recording it.

I hope you join us. We are looking for 201 people to march with the Lakewood's Community Operated Paper and Car Clubs. Nothing could be better than seeing this open source community backed newspaper and website spot in this parade filled with the residents and voters that have supported it for the past year.

It should be a great turn out, and fun for all. We will be handing out papers, special t-shirts, model cars and more - thanking everyone in the city for the tremendous support that have given this project.

As for the key, don't worry Steve and I made copies.

One of the amazing things is the amount of kudos coming in from around the country. The Farris family was at the first party and has helped shape this paper. You were at the first meeting, I think you would agree with me saying, that I never thought we would have the impact both inside and outside the city that the LO has garnered. The letters and interest from around the country is amazing and heart warming.

Some that have called and followed the paper from outside of Lakewood have called this project a great economic and civic redevelopment tool. While I just think of this as the little hometown paper.

Thanks for the kinds words, you and another 1,000+ are the reason it works. I'm just lucky to know you and the rest, and to make Lakewood my home.

I am not just being humble. I had very little to do with the overall success. If it had not been for the members like you that signed on very early and brought their dreams and vision to this project that deserve the thanks. Again, I was just merely here for the ride.

Ken Warren, Steve Davis, DL Meckes, Jeff Endress, Heidi Hilty, Brian Simko, Stephen Calhoun, Lakewood Chamber of Commerce, City Hall all deserve more of the kudos then I. I figured it out this weekend, more than 1,000 people and almost 100 businesses have been involved since we started. I give them all the credit.
