The Observation Deck

One of my coworkers just bought a condo on the Gold Coast. She will be moving to our fair city from Cleveland Heights.

Her first question to me:
Who has the best Chinese food in Lakewood?

Not being an aficionado of Far eastern cuisine, I thought I would turn to my fellow observers for insight.

Comments on any of Lakewood's other Asian restaurants would also be appreciated. I have always heard great things about the place at Giel and Detroit (reviewed by Chef Geoff, I believe)

Mike--- First of all, welcome to your friend. Give her a free subscription to the Lakewood Observer on behalf of all of us!

She'll just have to start on a journey of trying out the different Chineses restaurants in order to satisfy herself. Additionally we have a Vietnamese and Thai restaurants to expand the region from just Chinese to Asian.

I, myself, prefer the excellent Rally's on W.117 where a couple of Big Bufords make for a nice change after all that oriental stuff.

While Sczwhen Garden on Giel and Detroit is generally regarded as the Best "Oriental Food" in Lakewood. There are many other tidbits to be found. Thai Kitchen on Madison is good, and have heard good things about Thai Village. The best Pressed Duck and egg roils can be found at Golden Gate on Hilliard. And for a quick deliverable pick me up you can get good Crab Rangoon, Chicken Teriyaki, and Orange Flavored Beef from China Garden. A little secret with China Garden is to ask for "breath like dragon" which would be triple level of heat.

We should not leave out the finest Sushi in Lakewood, Sakura.

I'd have to second the post from Jim....

Had a very good green curry at Thai Hut, (though chicken would be a better bet than scallops) some great sauces..dumplings too doughy the ambiance might put some off.

Heard from KW that the old Tina's, by St. Ed's has gone Korean, and hope to check out the Kim Chee soon and will advise.

Golden Gate tends more towards cantonese if that's your bag.

Also add Wu's on Madison across from Malley's.

Probably Szecwan Garden is most dependable. (That wasn't my review)

It's not Chinese, but keeping in the Asian theme, Khiem's Cuisine is a Vietnamese restaurant on the south side of Madison just east of Bunts.

The menu is brief, with only 13 entrees but they're very good with reasonable prices. The most expensive dish is $6.95. One of the items is Pho, is a Vietnamese soup with thin slices of beef, rice noodles, sprouts and basil in a delicious beef broth. Very addictive! Another hit is the "Com Ga Xa Ot" (number 3). It's a chicken dish with lemon grass in a spicy pepper sate sauce. Spicy but not nasty hot. We've pretty much been through the whole menu, and it's all good.

The ambiance is humble, but most dishes travel well in carry out .

We would love to see an Indian restaurant in Lakewood. They are all over Greater Cleveland, but you still have to take a drive to dine Indian from Lakewood.

Khiem's is amazing. My girlfriend and I recommend the Bun Cha Gio.

I have heard nothing but great things about Khiem. I have never gone there, do they have vegetarian food?

We like Szecwan Gardens.

Kheim's is great...especially if you have a cold...it fixes everything.

We also like Wu's...near Sherwin Williams..Michael swears by the Tomato Chicken...it does not sound like Chinese...but it's great.

For my old friends in Lakewood, very rhetorical question.

Does Chung Wa exist? Many exciting runs to downtown Cleveland at early hours, to dine on mysterious foods in what might have been a hazy state;)

I will never be sure if it was truly good or merely just magical moments.

As for Indian food. If you put the word out to neighboring Indian spice shops (say in Cleveland) that you have a base of people (the LO) that would heartily support a restaurant (if it was good), maybe someone would give it a shot. I remember a certain Mexican restaurant that was very well rewarded for simply doing a nice job (even though it was indeed over the border in Cleveland).

But Chung Wa closed about 10 years ago..according to my husband who had a business near there. It is now called the Town Fryer...they serve Southern type food.!
