Jeff
I fear you need to find a lawyer and sue.
This is like when LO was put into the Oprah contest. She promised $50,000 for turning in a pedaphile. We get a letter back saying our serial pedaphile didn't count!
Time to collect.
Of course you are a damn fine lawyer, so maybe represent yourself. but can you also collect legal fees then?

OPRAH STIFFED US??? How did I miss that story? I think a consumer reporter from one of the tv channels needs to hear this one.

Oprah
did not stiff us, though we do have a reporter from another paper working on this story and another group of people that are starting a site oprahpayuporshutup.com and another group in San Diego that has been writing letters.
But when you read the FINE PRINT the pedophile has to be on Oprah's contest list! In other words it doesn't matter if you catch one on your own. That's no good, Oprah only cares about the ones she has featured on her TV show.
I guess we should have thrown Phil back in and kept fishing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is amazing is that this site and the paper has supporters that care all over the country!

Jim,
Maybe Oprah meant "catch them BEFORE they become serial..." or some such. Man, you guys got ripped off. I am surprised it isn't a cover story in a) the LO or b) Free Times. Something sad when a lying author can sell her a book full of untruth and a truthful organization can't get the time of day. She really offered $50,000.00 for catching a pedophile? She must have tough criteria because sadly this isn't a crime/mental illness/etc. that we are running short on. She should be paying out daily.
Maybe Bill should offer another contest: How to raise money for schools outside of taxation? A superhero league of local journalists hunting down pedophiles for Oprah's money would be one of my top suggestions: Win-win. Less pedophiles, more money for schools.
Phil
PS I don't think it can be said enough, good job again LO on Brother Petty.

I happen to know someone who submitted to Oprah and never received a response, which is not surprising.
Jim, I think your read on Oprah's list is correct. If a pedo isn't on the list, it doesn't count.
Not to mention the fact that Petty/Distasio has yet to be convicted.

Jim, I'm thinking we need another thread called Oprah Stiffed the LO or we should at least move these posts to the Brother Petty thread so that everyone interested in the BP story can get this update!

To be honest I could care less, there is no happiness in that money. I just think it is funny that Oprah, is no different from the rest of the hucksters out there.
As for the other papers in the city! Not one bothered to get the story right with the exception of Michael Gill. Jeff Endress was writing a story about how wrong they got it and why.
Vanity would be number one. But this happened while we were deep into the Fire Fighter Overtime story when people were screaming for us to publish. Instead we argued that we must get our story correct. There is no room for error. they we watched 3,5,8,19, and 43 write stories that bordered on fantasy! It was a lesson to just how bad news has gotten.
Thanks for the kind words. for the record in order of importance:
Dan Slife, Ken Warren, Stephen Calhoun, DL Meckes, Suzanne Metelko, Steve Davis. I just happened to be at the wrong party at the right time.
