CLEVELAND STONEWALL DEMOCRATS MAKE FINAL ELECTION OF ’05 ENDORSEMENTS
The Cleveland Stonewall Democrats made its final round of endorsements last night for the 2005 election cycle, including that for Cleveland City Mayor. After much debate, the final endorsement vote brought in an endorsement for current Cleveland City Mayor Jane Campbell.
Three openly gay and lesbian candidates were previously endorsed for this year’s election: Nickie Antonio (Lakewood City Council – At Large); Joe Santiago (Cleveland City Council – Ward 14); and, Mark Tumeo (Cleveland Heights City Council).
The biggest achievement during this year’s election period were the number of endorsements that were handed out for council races on the East side of Cleveland. “We went from endorsing only two candidates in 2001 for council races on the East side wards to seven this year, “ said Patrick Shepherd, President of the Cleveland Stonewall Democrats. “Our goal was to reach out over the river and establish relationships with the wards on the East side of Cleveland and we’ve done that. Even more, the council candidates on the East side reached back. It just goes to show you that members of the LGBT community, in various levels of openness, do indeed live everywhere, in all wards of the city, and these council candidates realize that.â€Â
A total of 14 out of the total 21 Cleveland City Council wards (two-thirds) ended up receiving endorsements from the Cleveland Stonewall Democrats this year. During the 2001 city elections, CSD only endorsed a little over a third (a total of 8) of Cleveland City Council races.
A total of twelve incumbents were endorsed, six each from the East and West side city wards. Also endorsed were one non-incumbent for an open seat on the East side (Ward 5- Phyllis Cleveland) and one challenger on the West side (Ward 14- Joe Santiago.)
Also endorsed for Cleveland Municipal Judge were incumbents Kathleen Ann Keough and Ronald B. Adrine along with current Magistrate Bobette Smiley Ousley.
