Game Story: Cardale Jones Can't Stop St. Edward

Post by Michael Deneen »

Many fans weren't sure what to expect from the St. Edward football team this season. After winning the state championship last year, Head Coach Rick Finotti left for the University of Michigan, and much of last season's starting lineup is now scattered across the college football landscape. In Saturday night's matchup with local power Glenville, the Eagles looked very much like the 2015 version, dominating in a 55-20 win.

Glenville alum Cardale Jones was part of the large crowd at First Federal Lakewood Stadium. The Ohio State quarterback delivered a pregame pep talk to the Tarblooders, ans spent the game on the sideline supporting his former team. Unfortunately for Glenville, his pep talk was the highlight of the night...once the game kicked off, the Eagles quickly took command.

St. Edward received the opening kickoff, and marched down the field in less than two minutes to take a 7-0 lead. Quarterback Jimmy Keefe carried the ball in from three yards out for the first score. Glenville went "three and out" on its first four possessions of the game, with the Eagles scoring touchdowns on each subsequent drive. Cole Gest highlighted the offensive barrage, with touchdown runs of 8, 70 and 76 yards in the first half. St. Edward led 35-0 with 5:21 left in the second quarter.

The St. Ed defense was tough all night, chasing Tarblooder quarterback Marcus Drish and disrupting his passes. Glenville mounted its first successful drive late in the second quarter, with Drish scoring on a five yard keeper with three minutes left in the half.

The Eagles led 42-6 at halftime, and inserted many reserve players in the second half. The final score was 52-20, as Glenville put together one final TD drive in the final minute of the game, making the final score 55-20.

SORRY, NO OBSERVER SCOOP THIS TIME

Intrepid Observer photographer Alex Belisle asked Cardale Jones who would start at quarterback for OSU on Monday. Jones replied "I don't know".
