The Mayor of Avon openly criticized the Cleveland Clinic at Avon' annual 4th of July celebration this weekend. I was with a cousin this weekend who attended the event and he related this story.
The Mayor stated that the Clinics plan for a health care campus are not adequate to meet the needs of the people of Avon. The Mayor pointed out that the Clinic has constructed a large family health center and will soon complete the construction of a new full service hospital. He stated that those buildings were inadequate to serve the needs of modern medicine.
He pointed out that the hospital center model is outdated and that many of the services offered at the new family health center are offered a few miles down the road. He cited statements by Cleveland Clinic officials that the future of health care is in wellness programs, home centered care and recreation.
The Mayor stated that he would soon announce plans to tear down the newly constructed hospital and downgrade the current family health center. "Similar services are offered just 3 miles away". When asked about the 2,000 jobs and millions of dollars in lost economic activity he said he was sure they could find jobs in some other city and that his development plans would offer a better vision for the future.
When asked what those plans were he angrily stated that " the people of Avon can see those plans after we tear it (the hospital) down."
