Veterans ATTENTION! Lakewood Vets Program on Tuesday
Posted: Fri May 22, 2015 6:33 am
To Lakewood area veterans and their families:
On the Tuesday following Memorial Day, (May 26th) Garfield School will host Lakewood's Memorial Day tribute this year, beginning with a 7:30 a.m. breakfast for the veterans and their families, followed by an 8:30 a.m. program. This always successful, and if I may say so, heartfelt event, honors Lakewood veterans, and supports their families/survivors.
Veterans are encouraged to visit the classrooms afterwards, as well as to bring their photos, wear their uniforms, and bring appropriate memorabilia to share with the students.
Former Lakewood (and Garfield) classroom teacher, WWII U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, and former prisoner of war, Maynard "Doc" Unger, will be the keynote speaker this year.
My dear late father, former Lakewood teacher and WWII U.S. Army veteran Robert Rice, will be remembered as well, for his service to our country, and to the Lakewood schools.
If you are a Lakewood veteran, or if you have a relative who was, you do not want to miss this event. There will be a large map showing the location of fallen veterans' homes in Lakewood. Those dots blanket the city in a poignant reminder of the human costs of war, and the sacrifice of those who served, in order to preserve our freedom.
Lakewood has two events like this every year; one in the fall commemorating Veterans Day, and this one in the spring.
Please call Garfield today if you would like to attend, so that they can get a head count on the food and who would be willing to talk to the classes.
Or if you forget to call, come anyway. There's always been enough food.
And more than enough fellowship...
For all of you veterans:
Thank you sincerely for your service.
Welcome home.
